I think there has ALWAYS been a power struggle between Apple and the carriers.
I posted a while back about how Apple could essentially become there own telecom if they wanted to. I believe Apple has the upper hand here. If the telecoms don't play nice, they don't get the iPhone.

It reminds me of the nuclear balance; M.A.D. If both V and T decided to raise the price of the iP5 to, say, $399, Apple could go to one or the other and day "you want an exclusive? Lower your price back to $199". The other carrier would lose lots and lots of subs and might buckle.

I don't think there is any chance Apple would build their own network. It would take, what, 5 years before they got decent national coverage? In the meantime the existing carriers would do everything they could to kill the iPhone.

They could buy Sprint? But do they want to hobbled by a utility that might get displaced by new tech? I doubt it.

Another possibility is that Apple is already buckling to the pressure. Note the reduced prices across the large retailers. Something is going on there. I don't think it would happen under Jobs, but Cook is an unknown.

All speculation except that the carriers are getting uppity and are probably sick of hearing (and their shareholders hearing) the pundits say "Apple is sucking all of the profits out of the industry", which is partially true.

I expect we'll know more when the iP5 details come out. Or at least we'll have some new questions <g>.

Very hip on the plane, hawking random carp to you and your neighbors. Super.

Apple has various patents in this area and I remember reports of Jobs ready to go it alone if he had to. Makes more sense to deal with the carriers and let them do all of the marketing and distribution and just collect the profits for Apple. It wouldn't make sense to build out a network. But, they could easily buy one or more of the tower companies. Bam. Instant network (unless I am missing something). Not likely to do so but I think that Apple has the upper hand here. If they didn't, they never would have been able to arrange the lucrative deals they have in the first place. If the telecoms were indeed in control, they would have said, "Apple, go pound sand, we are going only sell Android and Windows phones." That never happened and I don't expect it ever will.

You know, with the recent cut backs in prices, I am starting to think that Apple might get back on their June iPhone release schedule. From a marketing perspective, it would make sense and they could take the wind out of the Samsung sails. From a technical/manufacturing perspective, I don't see why it is not possible. Rumor was that there was an iPhone 5 phone almost ready to go when the iPhone 4S was released. They could pop this baby out this summer with some new Macs and then release a HDTV and maybe a smaller iPad later this year. "Plenty of products in the pipeline" Mr. Cook says.

It's more likely a trial balloon for a Kindle Fire with ads while still offering the Fire without ads, just as they do with other Kindle models.

Customers would then have a choice.

It might be $199 with no ads or $139 with ads. Or if they drop the price of the current model to $149, then $99 with ads.

It's always about who owns the consumer; always. Two competing thoughts:

1. Apple has the best marketing, the best product and the best ecosystem. They drive consumers to their products and they stick them.
2. The carriers collect the money, which is a huge, own the consumer, advantage. Never underestimate the stickyness of the payment relationship.

Try to take off your Apple hat and look at it from the perspective of the carriers. They're getting beat up in the financial press and by their stockholders for ceding (their rightful????) profits to Apple. They are being mocked, fairly or not.

In business there is an magic moment where the consumer pulls out the wallet and pays $xx for a product. But all along the retail and brand and manufacturing and component and raw material and transportation and labor supply chains there are competing interests fighting for every 1/10th of a cent of that purchase. Up line. Everybody is negotiating with everybody every day. All for a pittance of each consumer dollar spent at that magic moment. It's what makes or breaks companies everyday.

Does Apple or the carrier own the consumer more? Thats the game. It's a fun game when you win and a miserable game when you lose. But It looks like "game on" between the carriers and Apple.

I agree that the telecoms are getting beat up but I don't know too many people who are upset with that other than their shareholders. Carriers have bullied folks for too long. Telecom companies are not popular and the only thing that keeps people from switching more often are the penalties and general feeling that it is the same no matter which carrier you are with.

As for Apple, can you think of a company the "owns the consumer" more? The loyalty is there. I know people that had never owned an Apple product and now are Apple people just from having a first experience with an iPhone, iPad, or iPod. Apple has their attention, not the carriers.
