Apple’s share of global mobile phone profits: 73%

MacDailyNews Take: Boom!

We’ve learned and struggled for a few years here figuring out how to make a decent phone. PC guys are not going to just figure this out. They’re not going to just walk in.Former Palm CEO Ed Colligan, November 16, 2006

Kelly asked why anybody would pick the SG3 over the 4GS. Since Samsung is going to sell 10's of millions of units, I am guessing that they arent all buying it just because they hate Apple.
OK. It does look like a nice phone, even if it is the size of a dinner plate. But how do you know they are going to sell that many of them?

Assuming iPhone 5 arrives in October, how much exposure did Samsung have to iPhone 5 features?

Even if the 5 were coming out at the end of June (which looks less and less likely given that we haven't heard about manufacturing ramps), I don't think Samsung would be privy to any info other than screen specs, assuming they're going to be supplying glass for it, and the main chip, which will presumably be the A5X.

There's no reason they'd know about any features they're not supplying parts for, nor about the overall design.

"We don't see any scenario where BB10 can compete meaningfully against the three major smartphone operating systems:
iOS, Android, and Windows Phone," said Wedge Partners analyst Brian Blair in a note to clients.
I agree with this, except I don't see any justification for referring to Windows Phone as a major smartphone operating system. Not yet, anyway.

[edit] I see rnsmth beat me to the punch on that comment. Great minds...

Samsung sold 20 million S2's in about 8 months with staggered carrier launches. This handset is enough to continue that trend. The only Android that is competitive with the SG3 is the HTC One X and HTC doesnt have nearly the distribution or scale of Samsung.

FWIW, the rumor from Eldar Murtazin is that Samsung has preorders from the carriers for 10 million units.

Ah. So maybe two tens of millions. Over the life of the product.

I can believe that.

My biggest complaint about the iPhone is screen size.

My biggest complaint about the iPhone is that the vibration is very weak. I carry my iPhone 4S in my shirt pocket and I cannot feel the vibration. I was told that there is nothing can be done to make it stronger.
