I'm not sure they always have to use 5 metals. The point though is that different ratios of elements produce different properties. The cooling rate is relatively swift so the atoms cannot line up in crystalized formations. All other metals (? pretty sure) crystalize when they cool which creates weaknesses.

Well of course no one knows what Apple is going to do. Full rounded back like the iPad, flat one piece back or, this new design I handn't considered: iLounge put out this speculative piece today. This to me is a credible design.

ilounge.com

According to our source, Apple will make one major change to the rear casing, adding a metal panel to the central back of the new iPhone. This panel will be flat, not curved, and metal, not ceramic. Our artist’s rendition provides a rough idea of what this change will look like; it echoes the current-generation iMac design, to be sure.

It would eliminate broken gorilla glass in the most vulnerable areas, and being a simple (more or less) rectangle would allow Apple use LM without much risk, and to use LM for the other properties they crave:

- strength: more battery room, slightly less heavy
- color
- lazer etched Apple logo
- no scratches

It would also allow Apple to get its iPhone 5 out soon, which is getting critical.

And it just "looks" right. It looks like an Apple design.

You're right on those remarks. Have you seen the new Samsung Galaxy 3 - all that hype for a
so-so piece of hardware.

I am watching the broadcast right now. So far, not much "Wow". I lot of tech speak of how great things are but not sure that anything works. For example, that pick the best picture feature picked the picture of the gal with her head cocked and not smiling. What a feature!

Can anyone tell why they would want the S3 over the iPhone?

Their "One More Thing" was "One more Surprise" was something called "PINS" ? that I guess are local retail shops that they are going to open up. Yawn.

My biggest complaint about the iPhone is screen size.

Then buy yourself and iPad ;-)

I like the size of the iPhone just as it is. If they can increase the size of the screen by filling out the real estate and keep the same size, I am all for it. But, I have also had my iPhone 4S next to a larger screen Android phone while having coffee with friends. The friend with the Android phone ended putting his back in his pocket since, larger screen and all, it just didn't measure up.

One more thought on size. As has been discussed, I like that I can do almost everything on my phone with one hand. As the phone and screen get larger, this becomes more difficult.

I own an iPad, but I'd rather not have to lug that around to be able to get a better browsing experience.

To each his own, but personally Siri would cover many of the instances where I need to use the handset one-handed and the larger screen would provide quite a few real world benefits.

You're kidding, Slacker:

That's a really good complaint - or is it? I believe the iPhone screen while smaller is sharper. And, oh, how about the software, it's duller compared to the iPhone. td

I believe the iPhone screen while smaller is sharper.

When the iPhone 4 came out, the difference in resolutions was dramatic. That really isnt the case anymore. I would much rather have a 4.3" screen with a 250ppi than a 3.5" screen with a 320ppi.

And, oh, how about the software, it's duller compared to the iPhone.

That is definitely true for the apps. On the OS side, I personally think that iOS has become a bit stale. It probably doesnt matter since apps are more important, but I would definitely be happy if Apple did something more innovative with the underlying OS.

Kelly asked why anybody would pick the SG3 over the 4GS. Since Samsung is going to sell 10's of millions of units, I am guessing that they arent all buying it just because they hate Apple.

Not too excited about any of the software innovations on the S3, but in the US, one of the major selling points will be LTE, I imagine. Not sure that the S3 has a material advantage over the HTC 1X though, besides the strengthening Samsung branding (they are both on AT&T, feature big screens with LTE, Android 4.xxx, etc).

Assuming iPhone 5 arrives in October, how much exposure did Samsung have to iPhone 5 features?

I am totally puzzled about how this "sleeping with the enemy" relationship works.
