The unrepentant Ed Zabitsky and his $270 Apple price target

By Philip Elmer-DeWitt April 27, 2012: 11:40 AM ET

Some analysts will say anything to get on television
(rumors that he posts online under the name "zax" cannot be confirmed) :-)

Zabitsky on CNBC

FORTUNE -- Can't something be done about Ed Zabitsky?

The first time we looked at ACI Research's chief (and only) tech analyst, back in January, he was telling his clients to sell Apple ( AAPL) short.

The stock was trading for $450 at the time and was about to begin a run that would take it to $644. That didn't stop CNBC from booking him as a guest and giving him six minutes of free publicity.

The second time we visited Zabitsky, he was singing the praises of Microsoft's ( MSFT) Windows 8 and predicting "violent disruptive change" that would soon "shak[e] to the ground" the "entire cellphone and computing ecosystem." He was on CNBC the next day.

Zabitsky issued another sell short rating on April 19 and was booked once more CNBC, where he warned viewers that Apple's days were numbered.

Four days later Apple reported blow-out earnings and the stock shot up more than $50 in after-hours trading.

We got yet another Apple note from Zabitsky on Thursday. Same $270 price target. Same advice to sell the stock short. No apology to anybody who might have followed his earlier advice and lost their shirt.

Maybe this time the bookers at CNBC will resist the temptation.

I'm tempted to roll on the floor, laughing my fricking ass off, laughing out loud, too funny. ;-)

OT: Ed isn't also, since the IPO, and repeatedly since then, long RENN, is he? ;-)))

J.F. An even marginally sane person would be embarrassed don't you think?

I'm embarrassed FOR him.

I checked out ACI's website. Really bad. Looks pretty homemade and cheap. At the bottom of the home page it says:

"ACI Research provides original research and insights on the global telecom ecosystem to institutional investors. We help managers see what is coming next, long before they can obtain evidence from other industry sources or financial analysts. "

That's scary. I wonder who their clients are. I know one thing about them. They are pissed and have missed out on a whole lot-o-dough.

Kind of surprising Zabitsky is still alive let alone employed. If I were in charge of ACI I would want to distance my company as far as possible from this clown. Perhaps he has info on the higher-ups that he is using to keep his job. Why else would he still be there? Probably don't want to delve too far into that one. It could get really disgusting.

Well, we can all drop him a line and tell him what we think. That's what the whole telecom consulting biz is all about, isn't it, Ed? :-)))

Edward Zabitsky, Principal and CEO, ACI
edward@aciresearch.com

Thank you for taking the time to evaluate my background. My experience as a buy-side analyst, a sell-side analyst, and a strategic consultant/banker gives me an industry knowledge base and investing toolset that is matched by few in high tech today. I have also been fortunate to work with some of the best minds in the financial industry.

At Connor Clark, a manager of $1.8 billion for high net-worth individuals, I sat on the investment committee with Gerald Connor, who is renowned for his value investing style. I covered the technology, mining and airline industries. I practiced fundamental research by attending trade shows at a time when most analysts were only going to conferences and listening to management sales pitches. In my second year, I won the Founders Cup award, given to the employee of the year. Subsequently, I was made a partner of the firm.

I started ACI Research in 1997 in order to consult on the telecom industry to large high-tech mutual funds. I was a pioneer in disclosing my shareholdings to my clients, which included T. Rowe Price, Tudor Asset Management, Friess Associates, Wellington Management, Salomon Smith Barney and others. According to my soft dollar group, I was the most successful independent analyst ever who did not originate from a high profile Wall Street firm.

I changed the mission of ACI Research in September 1999 to assist promising small to mid-sized public companies to strive through the telecom industry's pending consolidation. I have assisted with the finance strategy, product definition and development, strategic partnership and asset divestitures. My flagship client, Ramtron International Corp. (RMTR-O), has grown its core business in excess of 10x since the beginning of my involvement.

Due to demand, I returned to consulting on telecom hardware and components. I focus on longer-term competitive factors and end-market business drivers, as well as product cycles. My clients see the value of these insights.

Throughout my entire career, I have maintained the respect of my peers by acting in a responsible and diligent manner. I have achieved success in every endeavour against the common wisdom.

I keep reading these articles where people say that everyone will choose Windows 8 tablets because they will want to stay with what's familiar to them.

There's only one problem with that idea. Windows 8 is not familiar to computer users. It's a whole new look. If people were already all running Windows 8, then choosing a Windows 8 tablet would make sense to them. But what more people are familiar with, especially in mobile devices and tablets, is iOS, or the iOS lookalike Android.

I think they hope Windows Phone will make the new interface familiar, before it hits the tablets and desktops.

Did we ever figure out if that is "zax"?

Either way, every show needs its comic relief.

The iPod Shuffle comes to mind. :-)
OK, but I think the iPod example doesn't translate to this market. Remember that the Shuffle came into being as the first flash-based iPod, made very tiny for people who wanted to go running, cycling, or walking. I don't see how a smaller iPad really addresses a great need, especially if it is as dumbed down as the Kindle is. The Kindle is for people who only want to consume Amazon content, and to surf the web a little. It doesn't provide anywhere near the varied experience possible on an iPad.
