Another Data Point Shows Apple (AAPL) May Miss iPhone Targets in Q2
7:45 am ET 04/24/2012 - Street Insider
Another data point is suggesting it could be a weaker-than-expected quarter for Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) iPhone sales.

Tuesday morning, AT&T (NYSE: T) said it activated 4.3 million iPhones in the first quarter. This is down down from 7.6 million activated in the fourth quarter.

In Q4, AT&T's percentage of Apple's total iPhone unit sales of 37 million was 20.5 percent.

If AT&T's percent of iPhone sales remains stable from Q4 then this could suggest Apple will sell just 21 million iPhones during the past quarter (Q2).

While it is highly unlikely that AT&T will garner the same percentage of iPhone sales that it did in Q4, this figure is alarming considering the Street consensus is 30.5 million.

This also follows data from Verizon (NYSE: VZ), also showing the potential for lower-than-expected iPhone sales.

Bads news galore this morning. The court hasn't decided, but when officials make statements like this in China then it is usually the party line. Maybe the court wants both side to settle out of court before a ruling is made.

I am still long on Apple. I do expect a good earnings report this afternoon.

An article in NYT, Nokia, Three Big Problems, downplays Nokia as a threat to anything. Going the way of RIMM. Apple is killing them all.

Nope. But assuming it's not good may be an opportunity to establish a longer term position. I guess.

Apparently the AT&T iPhone numbers are higher year over year, although a decline sequentially due to the seasonal factor. AAPL pre-opening price estimate is dropping however :(

Firm Jefferies said this morning AT&T's 4.3M iPhones activated in Q1 fell below its estimate of 6M,
they say this bodes poorly for Apple's Q2 guidance.

US carriers sold a disproportionate number of iPhones last quarter with the launch of the 4S and the introduction of the iPhone to Sprint. Things should swing back to normal levels this quarter as the 4S is launched with 2 China carriers this quarter. Will those 2 carriers be enough to offset lower shipments to ATT and VZ? That's the big risk or opportunity. But, Apple has a well thought out strategy to rotate the most amount of production from their production into different markets every quarter.

China has a total addressable market of 500 million cell phone subscribers. Since China Unicom and Telecom are giving away free iPhone 4S with 3 year contracts, who knows the limit for how many iPhones they could sell this quarter.

No sense wondering about the potential for iPhone 5 right now, but Apple will gain more carriers when that happens. China Mobile and Japan DoCoMo would be the 2 biggies.

Okay okay.

But in deference to all those with expensive and highly limited data plans, I'm providing a link to the picture rather than the picture itself.

I think the picture is appropriate.

Someone should PS in an iPad.
