Re: Off-topic posts and general thread clutter
Based on the feedback I've gotten both publicly and via private message, two things are clear.
- There isn't any support for my taking a more active moderating stance and policing the thread to restrict the flow of conversation, apart from the one person who complained via PM and brought the issue up
- People do support the idea of labeling off-topic posts with "OT" at the top, so that those who don't want to be bothered can skip them more easily.
As I accept and happen to agree with the general consensus on this, I will modify the thread header in the near future to suggest that people use the OT label, and will provide basic guidelines. However, I will not try to police the use of the label. I think people can figure out when and when not to use it for themselves. Nobody is going to be banned for not remembering to stick an OT at the top of every tangential post.
I am planning to cut down the header to a more concise form, making it more likely people will actually read it, while providing clarity about the thread guidelines. Given my present post-surgical state, I can't promise to do that right away, but I'll let you know when the changes have been made.
In the meantime, thank you all for already starting to improve the focus here, and for your use of the OT label. |
