Dear Steve
I think it is "In My Humble Opinion." By The Way, what does BTW stand for?

I still return to my argument the IBM already has a strong prescence in the database market with DB2. They have really worked hard on DB2 to make it a real competitor to Oracle/Informix/Sybase. The next step is to release it on non-IBM platforms. I have heard rumours that a port to HP is in the works.

The current features of DB2 make it a better product than Sybase is today. So why buy an inferior product? (Although nobody ever said that IBM was smart in its acquisitions).

FY96 and 97 earnings
For the whole of 1996, an in my opinion slightly optimistic loss of only $0.03 a share is expected.
For FY97 earnings of $0.66 are forecasted.

I think you are ignorant on how benchmarks are conducted within
the computing industry. No company can "skew" or alter a bench-
marks due to the fact they are audited by an indepent agency
called the Transaction Processing Performance Council. The audited
result is available to the competitors through a Full Disclosure
Report(FDR).If their are any violations that are found the sponsor
could get expelled from counsel and lose the right to due further
benchmarks. These benchmarks are industry standard (eg.TPC-C,TPC-D). As far as having a "bakeoff" between the big
three. I don't think you could get the vendors to agree on a
specific platform. Anywayn, Sybase currently has industry leader-
ship in open systems on all ranges of servers in tpms an price
per tpmc. I agree that these benchmarks will have little to due
with turning Sybase around. But it is a good data point for them.

Steve,

Go ahead and buy ORCL or IFMX at the current prices, they are selling at 3-4 times earning, while SYBS is selling at less than 1 times earnings. I bet in a year , I will be way ahead of you. People who lose money are normally those with the herd mentality and repeat what the so called "pro" are bullshit about on TV or newspaper. Real investors do not listen to those junk.

au contraire, my friend. i am all too familiar with how it works. i worked for one of the dbms companies for 5 years.

yes, the actual benchmark is not altered, but how it is applied, and the specific configuration is jiggered a bit to make it come out right. that's why i want to see specific apples to apples hardware configuration comparisons.

don't worry, there are still plenty of games that may occur.
