Re: Oil vs. gas rigs

Are they not saying that they are pulling the verticle NG wells and leaving in the horizonal wells (frackers)?

They've been just switching the gas label to the oil label for the most part. The rigs even stay in the same play when they are rebranded. There is a slow switchover to horizontal going on independently from the changing of the drill targets.

It should be noted that these rigs drilling for oil still strike gas wells. The big difference is the sales value of the oil is higher than the sales value of the gas because they drilled in spots where more liquid was mixed in with the gas than in other spots in the play.

thanks. Tim Cook seems to be the right guy for Apple now. But it is not clear how the design/development side will do. Most of the time when you have a strong leader die or leave a company, a massive number of underlings leave also to be their own boss somewhere else. Iphone 6 and Ipad 4 will be Tim's baby and no one know what it will be yet...

Yeah, investors are going to be holding their breath to see how Mr. Cook does with the next "innovation".
What was your take on the article suggestion that Apple is ramping up some specialized manufacturing and tooling? Surely we're not taking about another iteration of the same iPhone/iPad shells here, it must be something bigger?

Re: For XO - how APPL is changing under Cook

The next couple innovations won't really be Cook's, but projects started under Jobs. Of course without Jobs to dominate the late stages of design some of the details will not be Jobs-ian and the products may come to market with rough edges (e.g. Siri).

The real test of whether Apple can innovate under Cook comes in a couple years.

Re: For XO - how APPL is changing under Cook

buying specialized manufacturing equipment is Apple way of moving technology forward. It is pretty much standard operation for them. Part of it is that there is a lot of risk of doing cutting edge manufacturing. So Apple basically take the risk by buying the equipment (and making it work etc. etc. which is where the risk lie). We see the benefit from Ipad 3 with cutting edge manufacturing. The retina display is still in supply restrained. When Apple announced the Ipad 3 back in March, they basically put all Andriod tablet one generation behind. And that include those that were announced but won't ship until later this year. Now everyone is going to try to catch up on display and it will take at least 2Q next year before anyone except Samsung can ship a tablet with similar screen resolution. The flip side is that if the machine does not work as advertise, it will sit in the book for a while and not produce any tangible output. For Apple supplier, they may not have the cash flow to handle it but Apple clearly can. So it is a win-win for both given their financial position and the benefit of pushing the technology forward.

Most of the Iphone 5 rumor stuff is coming out from announced parts but some of them are bleeding ede (e.g. Qcom 28 nm communication chip). So the new "investment" may be there to ensure that they move the schedule to what Apple like and have first dip on the new parts (i.e. Fall/12)
