Carolyn I agree on the positive... simply pointing out that recommendations are often not recommending positive contents..

If folks only read recommended posts they are cheating themselves... .. even the the ignore button.. I've only used sporadically a few times in all my SI years and never for a long time, no one on ignore now.. it's only a short term penalty box more to prevent myself from wasting time, when I fear I may not be able to exercise appropriate self control :O)

recos are more a sign that folks concur ... than a statement of merit or quality.. I am often disappointed by a heavily reco'd post looking for insight and finding only pom poms... :o(

JMO
Be boring if everyone agreed...
regards
Blackie

I'm just thankful that we don't have to join Facebook to recommend.

In the past month I've come across three sites where you must log onto Facebook to post, to agree or disagree, to give it thumbs up or thumbs down. I don't want to join Facebook. Too much invasion of privacy, imo.

It's enough that Brad knows where I live...oh wait...that's a good thing 'cause how else would I have received such nifty T-shirts?

The problem often i feel is that the anonymity of the written word under an alias ,often allows some of the worst garbage in posts, and reccomendations.Be nice to know who, but that is a different topic.

I hate those sites. I joined Facebook but primarily to see photos of my family and friends, and post to my political group.

All kinds of problems with the format.. missing body language and nuance as we are not all gifted writers.. I always try not to take a post badly unless it is clearly and blatantly antagonistic,.. even then a civil response often makes the other person reconsider their tone ...
:o)

Twitter is turning out to be quite interesting. We're going to buy some FB stock as soon as all the excitement dies down.

You have no idea how many emails we get from former members that posted with their real names 15 years ago. They Google their name and are horrified that their posts are still visible, usually right at the top of a Google search result.

Remember, employers or future employers can see them if they do a background on you. In my opinion, I am 100% in favor of an alias for message boards.

My thoughts completely. I learned back in the Usenet days it was a good idea to use aliases, and luckily I did so once I hit the Web as well. I don't use the same alias on any web sites in an attempt to stay as anonymous as possible. I've heard about too many cases of people playing "Internet Detective" to fall into that trap.

People seem to love the social networks, but that is the younger crowd. Twitter goes so fast. I only have 8 followers but do get a lot of comments from the good conservative crowd.
