3. Post Recommendations
Dilemma: Are recommendations worthless if we don't know who the recommenders are?
Solution: No.
Why: This isn't Facebook. Most people choose to be anonymous. Sure, people might recommend a degrading post out of spite. But just as many people don't want to have to feel pressured to recommend posts by their friends, pretend to agree with the crowds for face-saving reasons, or feel embarrassed to keep silent on an issue.

Although it pains me to say it, I strongly disagree with you on this point. We are already anonymous if we choose to be. We don't need to be doubly anonymous. We are adults (well, most of us), and so I don't think we need to worry about feeling pressure to recommend posts by our friends here on SI, or to pretend to agree with crowds; and if one does feel such pressure, or succumb to such group-think, or feel embarrassed . . . well . . . frankly, it's time to grow up, or grow a pair, or grow something.
Maybe I wouldn't "recommend" as many posts if I knew that my imprimatur was going to be viewable by my peers here, but so what? IMO, 5 recommends by someone willing to stand behind his or her opinion trumps 20 that are anonymous and are, therefore, cowardly.
So, let's let the recommends be identified and let the chips fall where they may. |
