I am a military history buff. Especially the WWII in the Pacific. I have just finished the best book on the subject I have ever read.

The Battle of Midway (Pivotal Moments in American History) by Craig L. Symonds (Hardcover - Oct 5, 2011)
He teaches History at the Naval Academy, and this is his latest book. I thought I knew Midway, but boy, did I learn a lot. Plus, the book really "moves." You get a lot more on the personalities involved that I have gotten elsewhere.

Robert here is one for you -

U.S. Navy Ceremonial Guard Silent Drill Team was invited to compete in the International competition in Norway. The Navy competed against military units from all over NATO and won first place.

Thanks for that. Every bit as good as the Marine Silent Drill Team.

Hey, leave the drill teams to the Army and the Marine Corps. The Navy should have mops in the hands. :>)

You would think. :) Until I saw that video I didn't even know
the Navy did that, though I do recall that the cadets have
a damn fine drill team.

I was a "Pershing Rifle" guy in College. Mediocre drill team, but one of the guys had access to dirty movies. I tell ya, in 1953, at age 18, that was something!

I can still remember the movie some guy at our sophomore forestry camp showed in his cabin. It was on B&W film and flickered, but you could get the point--and the beer. Long time ago--1964.

Those were the good old days. The cabins were old railroad cars that had been used in logging camps. We had to scrounge our own firewood.

As for close order drill, I am incompetent. I proved that conclusively in AFROTC. Some cadet lieutenant thought he'd make it fun by introducing the term "MacGillicuddy says 'by the right flank, harch!" etc. Utter disaster.
