Neither AMD nor INTC are worth much as long term investments

~40% gain over past year is not enough for you?

40% for INTC for the last 12 months, vs 55% for AMD for the last 6 months. Compare both of those to the last decade.

I think it nicely makes my point that neither is a buy and hold investment. But it can be interesting for shorter times. If you want to hold either one for a year or more, you kind of need to know which year is going to work out well. Any given 6 months or 12 months during the last decade might have been good or bad in either one. AMD has had significantly more volatility than intel, so if one understand that there is not a long term trend in either one, and one is willing to go long or short, I think that AMD works better.

Are you thinking the next 12 months in INTC might be another 40%??

Ummm....IIRC, AMD reports on the 24'th. So if Intel decided to intro IB on the 23'rd rather than the end of the month as previously, what does that say??

Gestation for a new uP design is 3-4 years. I don't think the "ARM idea" has been around that long...

Uh??

A9 cores likely did start 4 years ago, they have been sold for several years now. AFAIK, the early ARM servers people have been demoing are A9 based, but A15 will likely see more traction.

What is interesting is that Intel used to push big, high power designs as "server" CPU's, and belittled anything else. Now the "hot" market in servers is using low power cores which have way less performance than the top Xeons, but way less power consumption too. Intel is waking up in yet another area where they are following ARM's lead...

What happened to Intel innovation? They seem to follow everyone else these days. AMD in x64, Apple with "Ultrabooks", ARM with power efficient designs, smartphones & tablets, yada yada.
