DDR3 controller in the layout includes the interface transistors which are large to drive the signals hard enough to handle 2 DIMMs. That is over 100 pins and those don't shrink with the rest as the process goes smaller. Remember this is a 74mm2 die. They are about half the size of those in the AthlonII and PhenomII dies because those have 2 channels of it, but since those dies are over twice as big, they don't seem to be as big relatively speaking. The PCIe and HT interfaces are much smaller than the DDR3 interface because they drive one load each instead of multiple loads (the clock pins drive every DRAM die on both DIMMs for example).

You can buffer them on the DIMMs, but it costs 4 cycles of latency for DDR3, so you turn 9-9-9-27 into 13-13-13-39, which is quite expensive on many PC applications. Servers can handle it, because of many pending requests are in the queue. Throughput there is a bigger factor. The same is true for GPUs. So buffering is possible, but quite expensive on DIMMs, its simply cheaper and easier for the on die interface transistors to be able to handle the unbuffered load. $1 on the die is far cheaper than $5-20 on the DIMMs and the slowdown in applications at the same clock.

neolib,

IMHO, AMD needs to scramble to get a toehold in this space.

About the best that AMD can do -->

A look at recent tech-industry earnings

"Jan. 13: Intel Corp. says net income jumped 48 percent, mainly on strong demand from corporations for Intel's higher-profit server chips.

Advanced Micro Devices Inc. says fourth-quarter income shrank from a year ago, when a big legal settlement it won from archrival chip maker Intel Corp. pumped up AMD's earnings"

Yeah, one time windfalls can hurt future comparisons.

neolib,

Yeah, one time windfalls can hurt future comparisons.

Yeah, and sometimes that affects share price.

AMD $7.49 - $0.98 YTD
INTC $21.46 + $0.61 YTD

I know, I know ... You'll start posting how great ARMH and NVDA are doing YTD

AMD is down YTD largely because they shot themselves in the foot. They admitted they have a directional problem, but have so far failed to articulate any convincing strategy for correcting it.

INTC (like MSFT) is still a cash cow, but they both suffer from the fact that they chronically cannot seem to move past their heritage products. They in fact have the same problem AMD does, they lack a convincing strategy in a changing landscape. The difference is that they still enjoy robust profits from the old landscape, which AMD does not.

Given INTC's Q4 profits why does it command such a poor P/E ratio? MSFT, AMD have the same problem. Look at AAPL, (and of course ARMH & NVDA). What is Intels story going forward other than "We will make a lot of money while being unable to figure out what to do with it while our market slowly implodes?" As Dell once told Jobs, "Give it back to the shareholders" seem to be the strategy.

NEW: 5W TDP 1 GHz dual core C-50 chip for tablets
AMD is tweaking the C-50 chip
"
AMD’s new version of the C-50 chip has a 5W TDP. The new model is still a 1 GHz dual core chip. But it has a simpler memory controller with limited features. It also doesn’t support as much memory or as many peripherals as the 9W version of the C-50 chip.

Acer may be one of the first companies to produce a tablet using the new lower power AMD C-50 chip.

Ouch! Per the press release, they've already started production of the fix while the defective parts have only been sold since Jan 9 Sandy intro. So this sounds like Intel must have known they were defective at the intro?

Since they claim it degrades over time it must be electromigration??

AMD rocking! With a bit of FUD for consumers, Fusion should be a hot seller in Q1. Who wants defective Sandy Bridge now?

I guess its always possible that started production of the fix means they've taped out the fix, but if they have parts by late Feb as claimed, I think that means they did start through the Fab likely about the time the defective parts were being sold to customers?
