I have just a few applications which do not run on Linux (Quicken, Adobe Lightroom/Photoshop). When I heard about Win8, I was chagrined and thought it would be the 'end of the line' for windows.

I recently installed Office 2010 on a few computers. I've been shocked to see that POS crash time and time again. Simply appalling, and difficult and unwieldy to use. I greatly prefer the interface and stability of OpenOffice. It's free, and it doesn't crash, and I can run it on Linux, too.

Now if Adobe would stop taking kickbacks or whatever is preventing them from the simply port to Linux...

I'm still running XP on a few computers. I could see running Win7 until well past 2020. By then I could switch everything to Linux.

It looks like a down day as things stand, rather then a humongous short covering "up day" that can happen at anytime.

I completely agree, Benwood. The only thing about OpenOffice that I cannot cope with is the spreadsheet. I use Microsoft Excel with extensive VBA. I've been using Excel since 1993. I've tried to use the OpenOffice spreadsheet, but the incompatibilities are glaring and the formula structure is quite different.

You're definitely right; Office 2010 is a big step down from Office 2007, which was a big step down from Office 2003. Rather than adding needed new functionalities and improving the code with each upgrade to make the software more efficient and truly functional in a 64-bit environment, they simply rearrange the GUI, break features that worked well before, and remove important tools.

Microsoft is past its peak in the business world. If they want to dumb-down their OS and productivity software so that the kiddies can play easier, that's fine, but this creates a huge void for business users and advanced home users. Hopefully Linux steps up and fills that void.
