Have you heard the rumor that Sprint or some foreign telco was going to make a pass at them. Believe it was in the WSJ somewhere.

Those rumors are quite old -- say 2 or more years. I believe that during the Patent Infringement suit, the rumor was that Sprint would acquire -- Sprint is up to their eyeballs in other problems.

I believe that DT's T-Mobile acquired a Skype-like company a while back (maybe 2 or so years ago).

The only companies that I see acquiring Vonage would be iBasis or IDT, but both have their own issues they are dealing with.

What value would Vonage bring Google?

You are reading too much between the lines.

Vonage still could be a dead company, but now has a pulse. By offering free International calling, they are opening themselves up to a new market segment, while not attacking either Telco or Cable directly. The Triple Play basically destroyed Vonage since both Telco and Cable were essentially giving Voice away for free (albeit for a short time -- 1 year or so).

With their new offering providing free Voice calls, Vonage is no longer trying to be a landline replacement, but rather differentiate themselves (for the time being) and attack the prepaid calling card market. Secondly, they are enabling a user to use their phone rather than computer to make these calls. I'd guess that its a royal pain to set up a computer to computer call -- now all one has to do is call your relative.

Lastly, international calls are expensive for the provider -- I'd guess that margins will be compressed, but hopefully with greater volume they (Vonage) can figure out a way to make some money. That is a wait and see.

To reinforce that this market rally in VG has something behind it, when VG reports their Q3 numbers, look for:
1. Huge spike in Subscriber Line Additions
2. Huge decline in Subscribe Line Acquisition Costs

I read they are now getting 25,000 new subscribers a day. Let's see what develops in time.

I only have a few bucks tied up in this one.

Did the company say that or did you read what someone wrote on a message board?

I, too, saw that by a poster to an article written by Eric Savitz of Barrons. If it doesn't come from the company -- don't believe it.

Let me ask you two questions:
Do you have a landline at your residence?
If so, are you a Vonage subscriber?

The only way as a landline provider to gain share in this business is to differentiate yourself -- I believe Vonage has taken this first step. The problem is, if successful, other competitors will copy Vonage and we are back to where we started.

If you do have a landline and are an investor in Vonage, you should sign up for the service -- I've had it for almost three years. It hasn't changed my life, but the service has been good and I've been able to save money.

It was not a message board. Probably the WSJ, Barrons or MarketWatch. Was from regular publication though. Don't put too much trust in message boards...even SI.
