If you bought a new car, your factory warranty is serviced by dealer. And extended 200,000 mile warranty is also best by dealer($3000) not third party. The technology of computer controlled cars are largely lost in the process of dealer service. Your dealer has the only tool that can diagnose the cars of that brand.

If you bought a used car, you are dependent on Sears or Jiffy lube to service your fluids. You would not know that your car needed dealer to reset performance. This is a problem sooner or later. we see many complaints on the internet of service blunders. Its important to go over the service with Sears and Jiffy lube before they start work on your car. You have to know what they are going to do to your car?

It is extremely important to know how long the fluids can be left in your used car. Aluminum engines has gasket problem if antifreeze is not flushed 5 years or 150,000 miles. ATF for transmission also needs to be flushed 36,000 miles or 50,000 or 100,000 depends on which brand of car you own.

Tires are more like snow tire treads now a days and can last over 70,000 miles. Brake pads are semi metallic and if used properly(pump the brakes to stop) it could even last 150,000 miles. Most improperly used by quick and hard jamming, last 30,000 miles or 70,000 miles.

Battery can last over 5 years if the acid is not evaporated away. You can only use the battery for starting the car an make the battery last much longer. Using battery for radio, or inverter for other electronic equipment shortens life to 3 years according to AAA.

While Auto Zone can loan you a tool to read your car computer for defects, it is not as versatile as the tool used by your dealer. But its a way to learn what is happening to car computer technology.

Cheapest transportation is buying $1000 1995 cars of 150,000 miles, and use it by replacing fluids, and learn to drive you car gingerly(steadily) to make all the parts last longer without service.

Sears and jiffy lube and other national service centers, may have untrained help. You may have to avoid them at certain locations by searching for complaints using google. No use risking your car for damages serviced by untrained help. Cloud computing is very helpful using search engines.

You maybe better off using dealer service, they charge $110/hr rate. But again you have to search google for abuse of your car. Complaints by customers can avoid your own troubles. Common problems are weekly car troubles at certain dealer service location. And sometimes services are not done but being charged for it.

That leaves you with your DIY jobs. Before you buy a used car, find out if you can DIY on changing antifreeze and ATF? Some cars are easier to do it yourself.

manifoldNo doubt, there are computer technology in automobile designs. But the most important technology believe it or not is weight reduction. from aluminum engines to plastic body parts and thin metal sheets to hold everything in place. Even thin wall low profile tires made handling better, And struts are better to handle the light weight of these tires(no dead weight bounce0.

But other technology made 1 million mile reliability a possible reality. Unfortunately material tend to oxidize and fail. And antifreeze may have to be changed every five years. Or else, the manifold gasket will leak($1000 repair bill). Even automatic transmission is cooled. That's how important antifreeze is. and has to be watched out for reliability.

If you want to restore some 10-12 year old car, you have to change the antifreeze for five year intervals. This id the minimum you have to do for driver level restoration to continue 70,000 mile service free period.

Light weight design of these year 2000 cars made octane 89 gasoline give out more torgue and thus save gas going up hill on highways. There could be 4 miles per gallon improvement on MPG figures.

Since 1993, cars use aluminum engines. Driver's level of restoration is changing antifreeze sooner than every 5 years, to keep gaskets in good working order.

On street level restoration, plastic bumpers made life easier. Street level restoration is basically rental car condition some nick and dents allowed but mechanically perfect including doors and windows. this is quite costly to restore, a lot of labor rate at $110.00/hr. Then there are computer inspection and adjustments on failed parts.

Show and concours levels of restoration involved taking the car apart and rebuilt every part to original condition. This is very time consuming and very expensive to follow a standard of excellence.

So, to do street level restoration and use the latest computer adjustments, you need a dealer to go along with the restoration, to make sure the car will work fro another 70,000 miles.

For cheap transportation, you have to buy cars 10-12 years old. In good working order. Change fluids so car can work like new. satisfy driver's level of restoration. Then fix the doors and windows. And you are in street level restoration. You also need to change battery, tires and brake pads.

Have fun. and a car that can run another 70,000 miles service free.

Gasoline formulation since 1993 has been changed to steam driven thru combustion cycle. Meaning the water in the gasoline expanded during ignition cycle to drive the piston thru its power cycle. Compression ratio of the new aluminum engines are 9-10:1. So higher octane gas will give more torque with faster combustion of higher octane rating.

The way gasoline is made, 87 octane is achieved for regular gas. Then mtbe is added for higher octane. MTBE burns fast adding torque while combusting. This makes better mpg if you travel in the hills. Or on level ground more torgue move your car with less rpm in overdrive(coasting). Highest octane can improve torque 4%. But the car can run at less rpm will save gas quite dramatic. As much as 10 mpg improvement can be expected on certain cars on highway traveling 80 mph(maximum torque vs rpm). 65 mph runs too slow a rpm for maximum torque for certain car design, to overcome hills On small cars with 4 cylinders maximum torque occurs at 3500 rpm for best octane performance in mpg. In city driving, higher octane will benefit running engine between 2000-3000 rpm and let overdrive do more coasting. Watch your overdrive rpm when you let go the accelerator.

So, octane rating of gasoline can save gas. if you drive differently. Using premium gas of 93 octane may work for your small car for maximum gas savings?

On computers in the car which regulates the shifting points of gears in automatic transmission, you can reset the economical mpg setting by switching on the battery and hold the accelerator down for more than 5 seconds. For more aggressive driving performance you press down for more than 30 seconds. These are preset performance programmed at the factory(Bentley method).
