I want an pretty steep estate tax on amounts inherited above a defined amount, like $5 million indexed to inflation.

Then can Joe 6 Pack have no taxes withheld on his first 5 million also?

Or is INCOME for fat cat heirs somehow different than INCOME that you bust your ass for?

I agree; was trying to find a politically palatable way; but the real issue is we now live in a third world situation where 1% control probably 50% of the wealth and 30% of the income of the country. Bush policies force fed an already worsening problem.

"social security that is a complete waste of money. For every dollar I put in, I'll be lucky if I get 10 cents back"

I don't have my SS statement from last year, but the '07 one said I have paid $40,500 in taxes thru '07. Maybe add a few thou for earnings after this statement. Hell, call it $45K. I'm getting $1300 a month. 3 years and I get back everything I put in. 3 more years, I get back what my employer put in.

Well said.

The thesis that the right wing never undestands is that they are part of a tribe (society); and as part of that society they have both practical and moral rasons for helping all memebers of the tribe.

The self severing reasons are that it is important to keep the tribe strong so it can fight off enemies.

And: "The moral test of a government is how it treats those who are at the dawn of life, the children; those who are in the twilight of life, the aged; and those who are in the shadow of life, the sick and the needy, and the handicapped." - Hubert Humphrey

"And it's not just that I get a negative return on money that I make that is supposed to be saved for my retirement,..

You have no understanding of the SS system.

SS is not and never was a "retirement" system.

It is an intergenerational contract to help folks cope as they age and lose their earning capacity, hence Social Security.

That was all it ever was supposed to be.

The problem is folks haven't been taught what it is.

By thinking of it as what it isn't, you get to the GOP brain fart that thinks it is "your money" or a savings account.

This is another of the massive failures of education in this country.<<

When you argue (as opposed to when you vent)

:) that difference makes a difference in so many things in life, aye?

>>And after all that, I look around at the people I spend my time with and I see that there is way too much of a sense of entitlement. No one deserves anything that they haven't worked for. That's what's fair. If we as a society want to come together and provide a safety net, then lets do that, but lets make darn sure we can afford it.>>

Here is the simple answer to the conservative "Horatio alger" nonsense. People who get good educations sledom use any welfare.

Those who don't get a chance to develop their minds for any reason often don't know how to be productive and they sort of run from life.

And as my dear old mom used to say they are still not living high on the hog. They live their lifes struggling.

You educate those people and you will not see them taking welfare. That is all you have to do. That should be job one.

In science they call this knowledge directed perception i.e. you cannot see what you do not understand.

None of my friends are on wlefare because they are all educated and know how to get work.

Krugman:

Gratuitous ignorance
The PEN/New York Review panel discussion on the economy is online. I’ll outsource the discussion of what went down to Brad DeLong. Just this to add: it’s bad enough to have people resurrecting 75-year old fallacies about macroeconomics right in the middle of a crisis in which knowledge is our only defense against catastrophe. What’s really bad, however, is when they do so believing that these fallacies are deep insights that have somehow eluded those of us who have, you know, been studying these issues for a while, and saw some (not all) of this crisis in advance.

man Cheney is one hell of a loose cannon isn't he? That guy is the biggest advert for the democrats I have ever seen. I'll bet most remaining republicans just wish he would go away.
