John- I started reading the Swerve. I LOVE it.
Great. I'm very glad to hear that. I'm a bit surprised because not a lot of folk like intellectual mystery tales of the sort he is trying to spin early on.

On another book, Robert Hughes' book simply entitled Rome, I'm reading it on my iPad since we plan to spend a week in historic Rome in late May.

Hughes still has his dazzling writing style that's more like artistic creation than simply a very long essay or even an historical work or, heaven forbid, a book for tourists.

And he starts with, among other things, Bruno's burning at the stake. In Rome.

If anyone plans to hit the Rome scene or has a particularly interest in the city or something even more powerful, Hughes' book looks as if it's well worth the effort.

I would eliminate all mortgage deductions. There is no reason to favor housing "investment", which is really consumption, over other productive investment. For most homeowners the mortgage deduction is hardly worth anything, since it is typically less than the standard deduction.

Did you ever read The Island of Lost Maps?

It's an intellectual mystery too. I happen to love those. It's a genre I really enjoyed.

Nope but I'll put it on the list. Right now much of my reading, but certainly not all, is focused on Rome.

I'm passing that along to my wife. I suspect she's already read it. But it's new to me. It's on the list but will have to wait for a bit. The list is long and will come to a halt soon after May 1, when the latest volume of Robert Caro's series on LBJ arrives. Ordered it a long time ago from Amazon and can't wait. Even Rome will have to wait on that one.

Up here in Canada we only get to deduct mortgage interest on revenue generating properties. There is no deduction on your main home or any others you may own unless they bring in revenue. We seem to muddle through just fine. Then again our corporate lobby seems far less efficient than our southern neighbors in the robbing of government funds.

What's so interesting about the US is the labelling and active political population division that goes on.

My father spends his winters in a suburb of Phoenix and I visit him occasionally. We do dinner at several of his friends houses. Other than the Canadians he knows down there, they are a mix of repubs and dems. Usually no dems get invited to repub gatherings and vice versa. We take some occasional heat at the repub gatherings, but don't bite. No sense being an ungracious guest in a foreign land.

We always chuckle about the free entertainment later.

You guys are going to have a tough time if you stay so stupidly divided imo.

I have heard statements from fellow dinner guests like "Our family has voted Democrat for 3 generations" (you can plug repub in there too) and I always think to myself, now there's a family that gave up free thought generations ago.
