Thank you dabum. I have DYN in my long term portfolio, at an average cost of 3.16, so you can say I like it very much. I allowed myself to be stopped out of my short term trade late today for very short term reasons. Money flow became negative after the run to 5.23 last week, which suggests to me that there is a large investor or investors unloading, and the stock will be under some pressure until he/they are done.

Longer term the pattern is just as you say it is, and I intend to ride with DYN for a good deal longer. And I intend to be ready to get back in with a short term trade as soon as it looks that what I see as the current sell side pressure subsides.

This chart has the money flow indicator I was talking about:

RULES FOR TRADING

Below are just a few possible resolutions, but the important part for you as a trader is to set self-management rules that you are committed to, and that are achievable.

1. I will not trade every day just because I feel as if I have to.

2. I will develop a proven trading system, and realize that one bad trade does not negate the system.

3. I will set profit targets, and will take those profits when they are achieved. I will not change targets in an effort to create "just a little more" profit.

4. I will not let emotions sway my trade decisions.

5. I will approach trading as if it is a business. I will be strategic, and logical.

6. I will learn something every day, no matter how small, that will give me a greater trading edge.

7. I will keep a trading journal, and note when and why my analysis failed and succeeded. I will review this journal weekly.

8. I will not fight the market. I will capitalize on whichever direction the market is going.

9. I will take small losses rather than let them become large losses. I don't have to be correct with every trade.

10. I will become an expert in one area of trading, whether it be options, one certain stock, or an index. I will master every detail particular to those trades.

11. I will invest in my success, whether it be a book, market data, or a trading coach.

12. I will act upon what the market is doing, rather than what I think it "should" be doing.

Reuters/Bridge has an online chart on its product which is known as a linear regression chart. For several years, this chart had a 200 day regression with two standard deviations for the upper and lower channels. Recently, they switched to a 150 day regresion chart, but I still like the 200 day one better.

I can't link to Bridge as you need an account to see it, but I did find a public page showing how a regression channel looks: vrtrader.com

Unfortunately, that chart graph is for intraday trading and so it moves around a lot. A 200 day regression is intended to look for stocks that are seriously out of bounds of normal trading ranges.

None of the screening programs I've used had a 200 day linear regression filter, so I wrote my own in Visual Basic. I've downloaded about 2000 symbols for exchange listed stocks and can run this to look for stocks over the 2 deviation upper range for short opportunities or under the 2 deviation lower range for long opportunities.

Just because a stock is outside its 2 deviation band may not suggest a perfect setup. I would suggest looking at a stock that is outside the band but also showing signs of reversal either in the chart or by stochastics.

I thought I'd share the output of last night's run in case the readers here might find anything of interest. The format for each line is symbol, followed by closing price, followed by the 2 deviation limit (which would be lower limit for long or upper limit for short). As you can see there are many more stocks above their 2 deviation range on the upper (short opportunity) than on the long side. Given the breakthrough on the Nasdaq of the 2000 level, I'd be more careful of the short side than the long side for setups. A lot of fund managers have their bonus riding on how the market finishes up in December and that should be supportive of the market. The smaller list of long opportunities might offer some potentials.

STOCKS TO WATCH - MONDAY, NOVEMBER 8

ARBA is setting up for a snap back up buy pattern. On 10/28 the price jumped on an earnings announcement and proceeded higher for the next couple of days. As the price climbed above the upper regression channels, we saw some profit taking come in. Profit taking was on light volume which is a bullish sign.

The price is now sitting at the middle of the regression channel which also happens to be the 38% Fibbonaci retracement from the $10 October low, just before the price broke out, to the high several days ago. This is where the odds are suggesting the price reverses to the upside.

There are several indicators supporting higher prices on Monday. In the middle window of the accompanying chart, you'll notice a series of short term relative strength and stochastic indicators. All of them have turned "flat" or are starting to rise. This change in the short term trend appears at a time when the price was still falling. This divergence is suggesting the price rises on Monday.

The lower window will show very strong fuel cells via the MACD indicator. These fuel cells should have the energy to propel the price to a new 20 day high.

If the price gaps up at the open, I would be a buyer right away, as long as the price doesn't gap too far to the upside. Anything lower than a 50 cents gap would provide me with the confidence to go long. A gap above 50 cents will take a different strategy which I will cover in another post. If we don't have a gap up in price, I would wait for the price to trade above Friday's opening price.

Once the trade is triggered, the price should not come down and set a lower low from Friday's action. If it does, the pattern breaks down and that's where my stop will be. I see about a buck and half to $2 in profit once the trigger point is achieved.

====================================================

KVHI, oddly enough, has the same set up as ARBA with regards to the price sitting at the middle of the regression channel. The short term relative strength and stochastics, in the middle window, are suggesting KVHI will turn in the next day or two.

The fuel cells in the lower window are still positive although weakening just a little.

The set up is a 4 day consolidation range with price pulling back to the middle of the regression channel.

With the weakening fuel cells and the consolidation phase, my entry will be a little different. It's a buy if it gaps up at the open but if it doesn't, I think one should wait until the price trades above Friday's opening price.

If the trade triggers, I don't think the price will set a lower low from Friday so, that's where my stop will be. My price target is $11.50.

Due to the consolidation, it's important to wait for the price to trade above Friday's open if we don't see a nice gap up at the open.

dabum-

i enjoy your posts and insight, but i don't follow you on GT

in your original post, you cited a stop at 9.16 and said you didn't think GT should close below its 200dma

GT hit 9.15 on oct 26th or so, and closed below the 200dma twice in the interval between your original post and this latest post

why would the trade not have stopped out or been closed in that time?

thanks,

carl

GUIDELINES FOR PLAYING GAPS

When a stock gaps up at the open, we must be aware of the first 20-30 minutes of trading. This is the trickiest time period of the day, particularly when the market is poised to open up very strongly. Buy orders that have accumulated over night and just before the open provide professional market makers and specialists with an extra advantage that they simply don't enjoy the rest of the day. They have a much greater ability to influence the opening price of the stock.

In many cases where the stock opens higher, it is often excessively higher, setting up a bull trap. In other words, the stock is opened up artificially higher to sucker in novice buyers (those who buy simply because a stock has good news or looks strong) so that they, the pros, can get out. This is why many stocks that gap up tend to pull back rather sharply after the first 10 or 20 minutes of trading.

Once the abundant premarket buy orders have been satisfied, the demand is gone, and the stock tends to give way to "professional" selling and a lack of demand. But there is an exception, and it is this exception that sets the stage for one of the most powerful intraday trading tactics.

Studies have shown that if a stock that has gapped up and is able to trade to a new daily high after 30 minutes of trading, the strength demonstrated at the open was not artificial, but real.

The strength in this case is real because it is being confirmed by continued buying "after" the early morning rush (the first 20 minutes or so of trading.)

A simple yet powerful way for the trader to capitalize on the stocks that are truly strong, is a strategy called the 30 minute gap rule buy.

THE 30 MINUTE BUY SETUP

The stock must gap up at the open by 50 to 62 cents or more. In most cases, a gap up much greater than $1 will be news related (positive earnings, brokerage upgrades, etc.), which is fine. It is best if the stock doesn't rally much from its opening price. While this is not absolutely crucial, studies have shown that those stocks which gap and stall immediately make the very best candidate for the 30 minute buy setup.

THE 30 MINUTE BUY ACTION

1. Once the stock has gapped open, the master trader must let it trade for a full 30 minutes. No action other than watching the stock is required during this time. Often the trader will be watching and monitoring several stocks that have met the preceding setup criterion.

2. Once the 30 minutes has transpired place an order 1/16 above the high of the day, which in many cases will not be too far away from the current price.

3. Once in the trade, place a protective stop 1/16 below the day's low. This often makes the play low risk.

4. Raise your protective stops as the play becomes more profitable.

This strategy has above average profit potential, as well as an inherent safety measure, better know as a protective stop. It also helps the trader to distinguish between those stocks that open up artificially strong and those that are genuinely explosive.

Carl,

In my case, the stops are mental and not actually placed with the brokerage firm. The price had already moved before I noticed the stop price being hit. Therefore, I never got to place the sell order.

If I had set the sell order with the broker, and it did hit, the exact same buy setup existed with another bullish engulfing pattern by the close of that day.

Since I prefer not to place my stops with the brokerage firm, I sometimes miss my targets by a few cents both to the upside and downside.

In this case, I wasn't quick enough to spot the price action and I stayed with the trade.

I've watched specialists and market makers pick stop orders many, many times. I agree with dabum, mental stops are much better than a stop order in the market. Been there, done that.
