ok, I am more concerned about the loss of freedom here in this country

effectively the media is now being put in a position to stop reporting on anything for fear of being shut down by the government. this certainly is not what our forefathers fought for

the US is occupying a foreign country, abusing the prisoners its taken in the process, and the American public has been brainwashed to consider this as business as usual

ps i think that some Korans are very small, so they can be carried around in peoples pockets, your argument is weak that this couldnt happen because the book would be too big

You think that Newsweek will feel too intimidated to report on controversial subjects? I doubt it. In any case, they published - and then retracted - something which was downright inflammatory, and which triggered a wave of hostilities all over the globe. They deserve every bit of the negative publicity which they received.

Is it physically impossible to flash a book down a toilet? Normally, that would cause a major problem... To reduce the argument Ad Absurdum - one can record the text of the Koran on, say, a microchip, and of course the text would be more amenable to various potential mistreatments...

But that's not really the point. Over the years, I had an opportunity to meet many members of the US military, from privates to Generals, and I don't imagine any single one of them breaking rules and engaging in unlawful or inappropriate behavior - be it against religious symbols - or people.

I choose to believe them, and not the manipulative self-serving claims.

so you think the prison abuse in Iraq is fiction or what?

snap out of it, a few plebes have been convicted already to protect the higher ups that were responsible

maybe you should try reading the news once and while instead of criticizing those that report it

What news? Inflammatory junk which Newsweek "reported" and then retracted - after it caused anti-American pogroms in several Muslim countries? This tells more about Newsweek than about anything else.

And the Abu Ghraib perpetrators who did the crime - are doing time. What else is there to say. Some of the higher ups were also punished. Enough to prove to all who are willing to listen that things which happened in that prison are NOT the policy of the US.

Iraq is on its way to have representative elected government. Their people are turning increasingly negative towards the extremists. Al Qaeda is on the run -- to the point that we are getting complacent, as if they didn't exist.

so because a Newsweek story caused anti american protests does it mean that Newsweek is anti american? !!!

please give us a break

Freedom of speech is pro-American. The fact is that the prison abuse is something the government doesnt want to talk about. Because in any other time in our history those at the top would be thrown out on their ass.

Let alone to invade a foreign country based on lies. Lies about weapons that didnt exist. Any other time and the president would be impeached.

Does anyone wonder why half the Presidents staff quit before his second term?

Some of the RED politicians are beginning to wake up. They are starting to see that the people are not going to take it much longer.

The fact is that the prisoner abuse was US policy because it has also taken place in Afghanistan and Guantanomo Bay. It is still the policy as long as no one finds out about it. That's the problem.

Many things are in the eye of the beholder... too many issues, too little time. I will only comment on one thing.

The fact that Newsweek reported/retracted what was - apparently - a libelous accusation against the US military has nothing to do with freedom of press. Maybe their action was related to having a certain bias, maybe not... but in any case, it was incompetent and irresponsible. One can expect this from a cheap gossip piece of garbage, but not from a paper that is one of the flagships of Western media.

Unfortunately, in the case of Newsweek the difference is becoming blurred.

<But then, on Thursday, the commander of the Guantanamo facility, Brig. Gen. Jay W. Hood, acknowledged that incidents "broadly defined as mishandling of a Koran" had in fact taken place.>

I will leave it at this. Newsweek is not the problem.
