Here is a group of models (ignore XTRP - since that is just the current track).

It looks like Katia will move to sea, although Bermuda might get hit - but this is still a long way out there.

BTW, Irene caused a great deali of flooding and at least three deaths in Quebec and flooding in the Maritimes. There are still many towns and cities without power and they don't expect to get it back on for everyone for some time.

Wouldn't you know it but my power went off right after you wrote this but after I decided to finally go to sleep. However, I'd have needed a tractor trailer and a crane to take down that scoreboard. And if I had the proper equipment, I'd have taken their lights instead given that a few stupid neighbors have continually sued the town to prevent a handful of night games (at the high school they chose to live near) each year. Given people sued to stop the building of the wooden beach playground a dozen years ago (saying it would attract the wrong element of five year olds from neighboring towns; the town prevailed and the playground has been a fabulous addition), and sued to halt the building of a new YMCA (saying it would clog the streets), par for the course around here.

As for the "other" storm, although a tree fell down and crushed the corner of a house down the road, we just had one small branch fall down and not even enough flooding in the basement to cover half the floor. Some of the town is still without power and the start of school has been postponed yet another day. Yes, expect a flood of lawsuits, pun intended.

Recall that Katrina's real legacy was the tidal surge that burst the levies that flooded New Orleans. Same deal on a more spread out area for Irene in New England. Here's a representative shot from downtown in my neighborhood by the river.

I swear this is a true story. At low tide at our local beach you can walk way out into the Sound at this one spot. So my son and I decide right when the wind is whipping up and the rain is starting to fall to venture out there to get a better look. I really have to relieve myself and my son is telling me please don't because you never know who is watching. I'm like, yeah right, it's getting dark, we're way way out, most everyone has left the shore area or had the good sense to be indoors hunkered down, and so on.

My son then decides to go way out on the slippery rocks which ordinarily is a bad thing even when there is no approaching hurricane, but when you want to be alone you just play the percentages a big wave is not about to take him out to sea. While he's looking out at the waves I decide to act. Then he unexpectedly turns around so I wave, pretending like I'm just standing there. Fortunately he doesn't notice I'm waving with my left hand, which is odd for a right hander. And at that exact moment, seriously, a newspaper guy with some big-ass telephoto lens takes the shot below.

Of hurricanes, hubris and hot water
by Kathy McMahon

This post is both my own experiences of living through Hurricane Irene on Sunday, 8/29/11, and a few thoughts about what is truly dangerous and what kills people in this type of storm. Most of the “news” clippings below are deaths from Hurricane Irene. These dramatic photos are all Hurricane Irene today, in Western MA (and one from Southern VT). I hope they give you cause for sober reflection when news reports say “It was all overblown!” Let’s be careful out there, those of us on the Eastern Seaboard of the USA. Even as the sun shines, most of the dangers of a hurricane happen AFTER the winds and rains die down.

yes , Irene formed alot closer in than Katia ... they were originally expecting Irene to veer more oft shore & just grazing the coast .

Lately though have been more of a subscriber to "if the worst can happen" thesis given everything else thats happened since tsunami <g....wondering if there is a link to where an entire replay of the last track of Irene could be viewed & replayed from start to finsh ?

Is this their experimental model for tracking Katia now ?
