When I look at siliconinvestor.com

It showed a post that was not to me, in the "Public Messages" section.

The post in question is Message 24725986

Also even though I've read it, it still shows up in my mail/inbox public messages.

Getting tired of seeing it, I just clicked on "remove" and it did leave my mailbox.

That happens occasionally. Just click Remove next to that post in your Mailbox.

SI Admin Dave: Its been years since this virtual "computer illiterate" old codger called on you for some help. Hope you can do it again.

I just got a new computer a couple of weeks ago, and in my efforts to participate as in the past on Big Dogs Boom Boom Room board, I find the Back button function not working properly. In addition, it seems that when each page is clicked up, that spaces usually occupied by your ads are corrupted with giant lettered incomplete advisory messages from "i"(icon) Internet Explorer cannot display the..(rest of message cut off due to size of fonts).

The only way I can get the Back Button to respond is if I click on it three times, which causes one of the ad spaces to disappear at each click, and then the final click takes the page back to the previous page.

Also, as I read and click to subsequent messages, their titles fail to change color on the message list from blue to red, which indicates that I have read them.

Otherwise I seem to be able to function on the boards, reading and posting as well as I have done in the past.

Hoping you will be able to get me straightened out here, and would request that your advisories in this regard are written "for the idiots" which might allow me to understand them <g> ....I've enjoyed my experiences on your boards very much over the years, esp. the "Boom Boom Room", and am anxious to continue. I turned 80 last September, and I firmly believe this board has been invaluable in helping me to delay the progression of noticeable memory loss as time goes by. Of course it should also be noted that I'm maintaining a better than expected rate of return on my energy investments, due in large part to the excellent, highly informative posts made to this great board.

Best regards,

Buck....AKA - buckbldr

That's a tough one to diagnose. Perhaps your firewall or browser settings are being too aggressive. Take a look at the top section of siliconinvestor.com and see if tweaking any of that helps.

Dave,

I have a Dell XPS desktop that came with McAfee virus scan, which I have been using, with the Windows scan turned off. The yearly renewal fees for McAfee are a bit excessive to my thinking. Would it be wise to deep six McAfee, and turn on the Windows firewall application which I will use with Spybot?

Thanks for your suggestions.

jon

I use Windows Firewall, Windows Defender (free from Microsoft), Symantec antivirus, and do monthly (more or less) scans with SpyBot and Ad-Aware, both using the free versions. They rarely find anything material. I've also been using the TeaTimer app that is part of SpyBot - it let's me know when something is trying to change the registry

You currently have McAfee as both your anti-virus and your firewall?

Turning on the Windows firewall won't replace the anti-virus program.

If you want a free anti-virus programs, the ones I see the most recommendations for are Avast and AVG, but there are plenty of other choices out there (including of course many choices that are not free)

Spybot is free, but its scanner has been passed by other choices. Still I use it since it doesn't cost me anything, and I think the "Tea-timer" app still works pretty well, I just have other anti-spyware apps and alternate scans.

Tim,

Thanks for the tip. Will investigate the two companies you mentioned. Yes, I am using McAfee as a firewall and virus scan.
Guess, I won't have any headaches uninstalling McAfee?

Thanks again,

jon

I can't guarantee that. Sometimes anti-virus programs, and more often firewalls, don't uninstall cleanly. I'm guessing that more likely than not you will be ok, but you might want to google around to see if there where issues with your programs, and if there where how people dealt with them.
