Tobago Jack posted a nice article about how contracts in Vietnam were starting to be set and settled in gold due to the unstable currency. Government has started erecting all kinds of barriers to the practice to force people back on the "official" currency.

A gold standard forces any loans to be against productive enterprise, not rentier finance and infinite derivatives. It is the choice of a free marketplace because it works, not because some government chooses it.

Saw that. TLT was looking weak yesterday afternoon, but rocketing on big volume today. You never know what is going to be safe on any given day.

Makes sense to me. Lots of vested interests in these markets, so maybe we'll see more choppiness on these moves

Need at least a five year weekly chart on UUP to see the down channel. The top of the channel is at 24 now.

So if US goes back on gold standard (They have a ton).. are they really screwed ?

What happens to us.. with essentially no gold (another example of us being lazy and sucking on the US teat)

But that's the whole point, with all the fiat money out there, someone could buy a lot of gold, and then what?

In another vein, looks like the fun is definitely over for graphite stocks.

The Dutch Disease is primarily about the effects on manufacturing of a rising currency driven by commodity prices. The presence of China these days makes it more likely because their consumption of Canadian resources drives commodity prices and hence the dollar higher. If there wasn't economic turmoil driving people to the supposed safety of the $US, the Canadian dollar would likely be much higher than it is now, crippling our manufacturing industries even more.
