that my mother told me they had to elope

Elizabeth Warren seems to have never heard of the old adage that when you find yourself in a hole, the first thing to do is to stop digging.

Edit: (and from another post):

Not long ago, we encouraged Elizabeth Warren to stop digging herself into a hole. She's still digging.

.....a fact apparently also recognized by her erstwhile supporters <g>.

I agree. Rand is a powerful and compelling writer as evidenced by the fact that her books are still selling.

I'll say something that probably won't go over that well here, but I think that Rand was an ok writer but often pedantic and tedious. I think she was incredibly insightful about the interaction of humans and governments and it is this insightfulness that makes her writing interesting.

I guess what I am saying is that she had great ideas, but mediocre writing abilities.

and still, Atlas Shrugged and Fountainhead are two of the most important books that I ever read.

"

All I can say is that her books tend to be long, to deal with ideas, and yet I couldn't put them down. I did not find her skills to be mediocre at all, but that is a matter of opinion.

Atlas Shrugged and The Fountainhead codified what my father and grandmother tried to instill......individuality. I read those (and others by Rand) at a very impressionable age. I also read "1984" around the same time and that one really scared the beejeezus out of me.

still, Atlas Shrugged and Fountainhead are two of the most important books that I ever read.

Robert Shrum argues that the Obama campaign has the election well in hand and has a strong case against Mitt Romney. That would be more comforting if Shrum didn't have something of a history of writing articles assuring Democrats that all is well.
Some time ago, a pundit noted that the skill Shrum has over every other political operatives is writing concession speeches.

Warren caught in another embarrassing lie?

I'm sure everyone here has met somebody at some time who was a pathological liar - someone who just couldn't stop lying, whether it was to pump themselves up or to cover up other lies. In fact this type of person actually believes his/her own lies.

Warren invented a persona years ago to help her get better positions and situations. It's served her well. She's a millionaire and on the nation's stage. She's had plenty of high-profile jobs and is very well-connected among the same types who play the same games she does.

Probably the one lie she thought would never be challenged would be her heritage. Why would anyone care? Hell, look at Obama and all the lies he tells. Look how far that got him. And besides, she actually believes it - so she has to keep piling on - or digging deeper.

Obama will tell you he was born in Kenya if it will help sell books. He'll tell you he was born in Hawaii to qualify for the presidency. He'll tell you he's a Muslim (14 times actually recorded on video) or Christian, depending on the group he's talking to. He tell you he'll never deny Rev. Wright any more than he would deny his grandmother. But then turns around and does both - gramma was nothing more than a typical white woman with prejudices against blacks.

If you're a democrat/liberal, a person fighting for the downtrodden, homeless, helpless, then it's okay to invent the credentials that will put you in a position to make a difference - to bring about change. Your sins are forgiven. Go in peace.

here's an oldie but a goodie from another thread

At least 36 members of President Obama’s executive staff owe back taxes to the federal government, Investor’s Business Daily reported on Thursday.

The Internal Revenue Service revealed that the three dozen Obama staffers owe a total of $833,970 in back taxes from 2010.

Nearly 1/3 of Obama’s aides make more than $100,000. Twenty-one of them are paid $172,200 per year, the top White House salary. In total, Obama’s staff of 457 aides made more than $37 million last year.

“It’s ironic,” Ryan Ellis, tax policy director of Americans for Tax Reform, told The Daily Caller. “The same week that President Obama says that people who paid their full obligation should pay more, it’s ironic that people who work for President Obama haven’t even paid their own taxes.”

The IRS report also said that thousands of federal employees owe a total of more than $3.4 billion in back taxes. Many of those who are delinquent on their tax obligations include employees of the U.S. Senate who worked on tax-offender laws enacted by Congress.

“The people who wanted to raise taxes to expand the size of government at the same time aren’t paying their full part,” Ellis said.

The IRS will attempt to negotiate back-tax payment plans with those who owe. None of the federal employees will be let go: According to federal law, only IRS workers can be fired for not paying.

Departments with employees who owe the IRS include both branches of Congress, the Department of Education, the Treasury Department, the Department of Justice and the Postal Service.

OT - Nice dogs... and they didn't harm the turtle?

One of my best friends is a neighbors big golden retriever. He is a beautiful beast, looks much better than most retrievers on dog food ads, but he ain't too smart. I can't stop him from attacking cars and trucks when we go for a walk, which is almost every day.

We have more dog friends - a couple of labs, a jack russell, a pit and some others. We travel quite a lot and cannot keep dogs, but when we're home we feed them - and ended up befriending half the canine population of the neighborhood.

The days when I could just sit outside and read a book in peace are gone.... :)
