Is there any legal principle that says it is possible to abuse your fifth amendment right not to incriminate yourself?

I was listening to a clip of a Senate GSA hearing yesterday. One of the senators asked a guy what his title at the GSA was. They guy invoked his 5th right and refused to tell the Senator what his title was.

If there is no legal problem with this then there is a moral, and commonsense problem with it. There is no conceivable way he could have incriminated himself by answering that question. It shows contempt for the Senator not to mention every citizen of the US.

Fleecing the Taxpayer in Las Vegas
by Roger Pilon
By Roger Pilon

Today POLITICO Arena asks:

Are the GSA/Las Vegas spending scandals a major political headache for the Obama administration, since they happened on its watch? Or can Democrats distance themselves from the seemingly renegade agency?

My response:

What?! Government waste, fraud, and abuse?! I’m shocked! Shocked!

This could be a political headache for the Obama administration, but only if Republicans play it right — so Obama probably doesn’t have much to worry about. The basic principle could not be simpler: as Milton Friedman so often put it, no one spends someone else’s money as carefully as he spends his own. That applies in spades to government.

So here’s the political point. Democrats, unlike Republicans (at least nominally), belong to the party of government. For every problem, they see not a private but a government solution. Market competition disciplines private abuses — not perfectly, to be sure, but far better than whatever controls there may be in the public sector. That’s one reason we should turn to government not as a first but as a last resort. You don’t like being abused as a taxpayer? Then don’t vote for the party of government.

Fleecing the Taxpayer in Las Vegas is a post from Cato @ Liberty - Cato Institute Blog

With the anti-semitism and elimination of gender roles, sweden sure is sounding like a progressive wonderland.

But hey, at least the jews will get free healthcare when they are attacked by their neighbors.

Listening to People's Radio this morning to a story on conflict between the two Sudans. Big long story that attributed the entire cause of the conflict to oil. Not ONE mention, not a breath that there may be some religious component to the fighting there. Just moral equivolence - both sides are being pig headed and greedy.

Nothing about the Islamic North continuing to intimidate and kill the non-islamic people of the South.

And one more little detail, the reporter kept talking about "civil war" there even though there are two sovereign nations involved.

People own the lake bottoms of the lakes formed by the Illinois River by dams. Right out to the original channel. They lease out the rights to build duck hunting blinds.

Not surprised about this at all. However, could Obama usurp the military this way? They wouldn't stand for it, would they? When and who would make a stand? The Joint Chiefs?

Of course. I did not mean to omit anyone, just popped out with a few who came to mind first.

QUOTE OF THE DECADE

This quote was translated into English from an article appearing in the
Czech Republic as published in the Prager Zeitung of 28 April 2011.

"The danger to America is not Barack Obama but a citizenry capable of entrusting an inexperienced man like him with the Presidency. It will be far easier to limit and undo the follies of an Obama presidency than to restore the necessary common sense and good judgment to a depraved electorate willing to have such a man for their president. The problem is much deeper and far more serious than Mr. Obama, who is a mere symptom of what ails America. Blaming the prince of the fools should not blind anyone to the vast confederacy of fools that made him their prince. The Republic can survive a Barack Obama. It is less likely to survive a multitude of Idiots such as those who made him their president."
