Rande, I am sure that it will all come out in time. Recent resignations tell some kind of a tale.
So far it seems as if misjudgement of the foam damages and the decision to not examine the shuttle every time from orbit with an external walk or viewer.
I know that they could have sent a man out in a suit and he can stay back 40 feet and have the shuttle turn slowly as he takes videos is a no brainer. That means noboby though of it, me a retired non space walker though of it.
For the life of me I cannot see any reason it cannot be done.
For the life of a few others it should have been done.

Yogi, The fact that they did this tells me that NASA need an enema, clear out all the old f*rts and good sh*ts.
In essence they have become beurocracy bound, and nothing but heads rolling at all levels will help.

I agree with you 99+ percent!

President Bush should really concentrate hard on improving things at NASA, for the overall good of the human race if nothing else.
Unfortunately though, I have little confidence "major surgery" will be accomplished anytime soon.

Yogi, Beurocrats are like herds of water Buffalo. When attacked they form rings to protect the weaker one and outsiders face rows of horns. SAme level of intelligence.
The only cure is to periodically disband an institution after 10-20 years and move the assets to a new holding corporation who can then hire to fill need from all people, not just the old cronies.
France does this and it is the only way you can do it. Set up an organization and hire for a 20 year period. Tell them after 20 years the job is gone. As each year goes by hire for 1 less year. As the time expires you will know the dead wood and they do not get hired by the new company.

Bill,

I agree all the way, as it is high time something serious is done to end the corruption and mismanagement which becomes entrenched and holds on to power at all costs like crusty old barnacles on the hull of a rudderless ship....

Yogi, Well, I hope they do a good job. Nasa has many good people, with a number of of deadwood types, so they need to make sure of their facts before acting.
In addition, the layers of beuro need to be trimmed and make access up the line easier and better for people who see problems.
However, like excess gain in any circuit, you can get a system that is too sensitive and keeps stopping.

Sounds like some of the computers I have had in the past, like the infamous Packard Bell P-100 with the "huge" 1 gig hard drive.... <g>

Yogi, Yes, too much managerial structure and people start bypassing to get something done.
