Fold the first hand, almost without exception (probability will eliminate the all-in arses usually after a few hands).

Don't be afraid to fold most of the time until a decent hand comes up.

Cheap calls can sometimes work themselves out.

PS, I play online at pokerstars.net for just play money.

Levitt’s Poker Paper: It’s a Game of Skill

Steve Levitt has a new working paper: “The Role of Skill Versus Luck in Poker: Evidence from the World Series of Poker,” with University of Chicago colleague Thomas J. Miles.

Using data from the 2010 World Series of Poker, Levitt and Miles found that high-skilled players earned an average return on investment of over 30 percent, whereas all other players averaged a 15 percent loss. This finding has serious implications on the legality of online poker, as that debate is heavily dependent on whether the game is based on skill or luck.

The press has gone to town on Levitt’s timely paper, as the executives of Full Tilt Poker, PokerStars and Absolute Poker – three online poker companies – were indicted by federal prosecutors last month for “tricking” banks into processing gambling profits. Check out the coverage on the Times‘s Economix blog, The Huffington Post, and the U.K.’s Daily Mail.

Knox deputies raid Bexhill subdivision poker game
By News Sentinel staff

Posted July 7, 2011 at 5:57 p.m.

KNOXVILLE - Knox County Sheriff's Office deputies raided yet another allegedly illegal gambling operation Wednesday night.

The latest raid targeted a poker game inside a private residence in the Bexhill subdivision in West Knox County, according to a KCSO spokeswoman Ashley Haynes.

Deputies discovered eight people around one poker table at 1304 Buxton Drive, and seized approximately $1,000 cash, Haynes said.

No arrests were made, but all information was turned over the Knox County District Attorney General's Office for possible charges, she said.

The raid follows at least seven other such operations carried out by KCSO within the past five weeks, targeting underground poker games and businesses operating video poker machines.

More details as they develop online and in Friday's News Sentinel.

MLB investigating A-Rod for illegal poker games

August 3, 2011 4:13 PM

Major League Baseball is investigating Alex Rodriguez for participating in illegal poker games and the Yankees slugger could face suspension, an anonymous MLB executive told ESPN.com.

The investigation stems from allegations published on RadarOnline.com that Rodriguez played in at least two underground games that took place at a record executive's Beverly Hills mansion.

According to the report, A-Rod was at one game that involved some people openly using cocaine and a fight over one player not wanting to cough up his $500,000 in losses.

He had already received warnings about his participation in underground poker games six years ago from the Yankees' organization and commissioner Bud Selig.

ESPN's anonymous source said that Selig is "fed up" with the Yankees slugger.

SI.com reported that Selig himself intends to interview Rodriguez about these latest allegations. If the investigation confirms Rodriguez's participation in the games in Beverly Hills, he could face a suspension from Major League Baseball.

This isn't the first time this season that A-Rod has drawn the scrutiny of the league. In June, Major League Baseball investigated Rodriguez's contact with a cousin who was banned from the team for his role in the player's using performance enhancing drugs back in 2003.

Rodriguez is currently on the 15-day disabled list with a torn meniscus in his right knee, and he is expected to remain out of action until mid-August.

So what exactly are the laws about playing poker for money IN YOUR OWN HOME? Is it just flat out illegal in all cases? Seems friggin' insane...
