Because of this I'd prefer it if somebody else could take over the moderator role. Just PM me.

I can't PM you because you have me on ignore.

As you know, I moderate the AMD v Intel thread. Subject 57040

If people would be interested in the kind of liberal moderating policy I employ there, I would be glad to moderate here. I'm not a techie. I've been invested in both Intel and AMD but am not invested in either at the moment - but am watching.

If I were asked to moderate I would lift all the bans on this thread apart from the long-standing bans from several years ago which pre-date my involvement in this board.

For this board, here is an amended version of the policy I would employ:

This is not the "home board" of AMD. In SI terms, it is not a "Bulls" or "Bears" board. All investors, including the non-committed, are equally welcome.

Moderation will be liberal to encourage searching questions and open discussion in a lively and pleasant atmosphere. I will rely heavily on the self-discipline and experience of posters.

Any board can be negatively affected by posters who are often off-topic,or who bait others in a personal or insulting manner,or post often without content. I do not expect to be asked to deal with occasional lapses. But if there are persistent offenders I will use bans of increasing duration."

...And, .... if elected, I promise to email each and every poster here that has been reticent or to shy, to post, a Jamaican spliff.

Or, My, Fellow 'Mericans, some pot in every chicken.

Then I definitely don't want you to moderate the thread.

re: Moderation will be liberal...

Then I absolutely definitely most assuredly don't want you to moderate the thread. :)

As controversial as it has been, the actions Rink has taken have improved the thread IMHO. Lifting the bans would allow all the worst offenders back in to stir things up. That makes no sense.

Besides, isn't one thread enough for you to moderate? Not to mention that it already employs your philosophy of moderation... why duplicate?

Don't take this personally, but I have to wonder about the sanity of any person that would volunteer to take on the role of moderator. Kind of like the job of referee or umpire. Special kind of individual.

Regards,

JJ

How can I take it personally when I don't know you and you don't know me.

However Rink might take it personally as might all other moderators. Are you an exception to your own rule?

I had been asked to put my name forward before I did. I wanted to make clear that I would lift the bans and try to restore the board to the lively enjoyable and informative place it used to be for most of Mani's time.

Your views on the moderation of the board are well known. You seem to ban the same people Rink does. I don't consider them "trouble makers". To me they are long standing members of SI who have a contribution to make. Their views may or may not be controversial - I suppose it depends on what yours are. But forums are about the exchange of views within certain commonly agreed ground rules. The rules are actually set by SI, not moderators.

I see one ban on this thread. Did he ban himself?

SI admins can ban people on any thread including unmoderated threads.

That person posts on the AMD v Intel thread so obviously is not subjected to a blanket SI ban. Judgmental comments were made to that person on this board. It was reasonable to assume he was banned here.

I don't want to be drawn into a discussion of the status of any individual. I have visited this board perhaps five times, usually in response to a post addressed to me and I don't intend to make a habit of it.

I think the business of the AMD moderated board should be conducted openly on the AMD moderated board.
