HELP! My son took a video for his work in connection with a legal settlement and after he had shot it, they told him they needed a DVD by the 28th to close the deal. This is a Sony DCF-TRV27 which uses a Mini DV tape. Ordinarily, he would use the USB streaming feature of the camera to pull the video into his computer and then just burn a DVD, but he hasn't done that in a while and it isn't working for some reason. He has found services that will do the transfer, but they are all send-away services that are talking a couple of weeks to get the job done. The company is more than happy to pay for emergency service. Bay Area would be ideal, but someplace that can get it FedEx both ways would work too.

Any ideas, anyone?

The standard interface to transfer the content of a MiniDV tape to a PC is Firewire. I checked the Sony support system sonystyle.com  and confirmed that the DCR-TRV27 has a Firewire aka i.LINK aka IEEE 1394 interface. Additionally it is a digital camcorder with a standard resolution so no proprietary problems. Creating an unedited DVD takes me about 3-4 hours. 1 hour for the transfer of the tape content to PC (about 12 GByte), 1 hour simple editing (titles, DVD menu), 1-2 hours transcoding to the MPEG-2 video/audio data of the DVD and burning the DVD. I have created about 40 DVDs like that during the past months as a backup of videos recorded since 2003.

Ask your son to try the Firewire route. If it doesn't work I offer to produce the DVD for him. Depending on the speed of the transport service, let's say two days each for USA-Germany and back, it's a matter of five working days. Dec. 25th and 26th are public holidays in Germany so 28th should work if the parcel is picked up until tomorrow.

We talked about firewire, but he doesn't think he has ever had a firewire cable. I *think* he has a firewire adapter in his PC which we got some years ago in relation to his music production, but I don't know if it has ever been used.

I will pass along the recommendation and offer. Thanks. It would be pretty incredible to have to send it all the way to Germany!

I did find a site called savetheimage.com which seems to advertise a 1-2 day turnaround for a small premium and have passed that along too.

Mr. and Mrs. Goetz

From 1975 to 1982 my family lived in a village of about 3000 inhabitants. Our neighbors were Mr. and Mrs. Götz, a childless couple. They used to be farmers but when small-scale farming didn't pay the bills any more they assumed other jobs. They continued to harvest potatoes and apples on their fields, we children spent a lot of time helping them.

Mr. Götz died in 1995. This Sunday his wife died also, at the age of 84. Since a heavy stroke about a decade ago she had been confined to a nursing home but she kept her spirit and remained serene and witty. The funeral service for Mrs. Götz will be tomorrow. I have scanned some negatives, here two of them:

And a great story!

That's a very nice tribute to Mr. and Mrs. Goetz, JJ. Will you be able to attend the services?

Thanks!

No, and I don't feel good about it. I live about 500 miles away which would mean an absence of three days which is difficult to arrange on short notice. Since the birth of our twins in summer 2003 I have basically been bound to our home. No theater, no concerts, no movies, no restaurants, very few visits of relatives and friends at their places. We don't trust a babysitter to take care of our three little ones concurrently, they can be demanding. Any relatives or close friends live too far away. For events with a longer planning time we ask one of the grandmothers for help.

My best possible tribute I could think of was the one I did - browsing through my negative archive (about 2000 negative strips), scanning some images and distributing them. Mr. and Mrs. Götz were camera-shy and I doubt that there are any other images of them.

My mother who still lives in that town has organized the funeral and my brother who lives 100 miles away will also attend.

Eventually I will visit the cemetery. Both we and the Götz couple lived next to it 1975-1982. They had an old farmhouse 30 m away and a new house for living. Mr. Götz joked about "the old home, the new home and the eternal home" next to each other.

I'm sorry you won't be able to attend, but your pictures will be a fine contribution, and fitting tribute to a pair of gentle souls.

Your love and dedication will be repaid in later years. You'll be surprised at how quickly the babies grow. They'll be in school all day before you know it!

And then you'll blink again and be a grandpa. I have no idea where the past 15 years have gone and it seems to be accelerating.

I don't know, Oral. I keep blinking, but my kids aren't producing :-/. I'd hate to think all my practice taking baby pictures will go to waste.
