Brazil's secret fiscal weapon: the tax "lion

"When it comes to collecting taxes, Brazilians are really good. They are probably some of the best in the world," said Italo Lombardi, an analyst with Standard Chartered in New York.

In Brazil, groups of armed agents fly around the country by helicopter, pounding on doors and instilling fear in the hearts of those who break the law.

They're not the police - they're from the tax agency.

The Federal Revenue Service, which has gained global renown for its tough and creative tactics, will be one of the most important keys to Brazil's economic prospects in 2012. President Dilma Rousseff is counting on the agency's tax-collecting prowess to help her government meet ambitious budget targets without smothering the country's suddenly brittle economy.

The agency, known as "The Lion" for its official emblem as well as its ferocious pursuit of tax dodgers, deploys everything from gun-toting operatives to meters on beer kegs in breweries to ensure that individuals and companies fully declare, and pay, their share to the government.

Recent operations have had names like "Black Panther" and "Delta" that are usually more associated with army special forces. The agency even uses helicopters to size up millionaires' homes and make sure they are consistent with their tax returns.

I have done practically everything while driving. I remember driving to Kansas from Saskatchewan with my dad who was snoring away in the passenger seat when I was 16. I had the Allman Brothers on and was sitting cross legged and driving his Delmont 88 way over the speed limit.

China gas reforms spark investment boom
uk.news.yahoo.com

HONG KONG (Reuters) - China's big state companies, confident on the outlook for domestic natural gas reforms, are buying up local distributors and raising fresh capital - and making gas the hottest prospect for energy investment in the world's top energy consumer.

The prospects for expansion and acquisitions also have China's natural gas distributors trading like growth stocks, instead of bog-standard utilities.

China is pushing energy price reforms and spending billions of dollars on gas imports and infrastructure to cut the use of coal, which supplies over 70 percent of its energy but has made it the world leader in mine accidents and greenhouse emissions, and among the worst in air pollution.

Haim, you need a better compass. I live in NZ and the electorate constantly votes against what I think. If you lend money to authorized banks, government departments, or individuals in NZ, I will have no moral qualms at all in refusing to help repay those loans.

You trying to bleed innocent tax-payers shows how morally bankrupt your collectivist ideology is.

I offer morality training at a very reasonable price if you want to understand how you are criminally inclined without realizing it.

"Government authorized banks" does not mean innocent bystanders are liable for the debts of those banks. If you don't want to lose money in such enterprises, don't lend to them.

I actually don't care whether Ron Paul gets the Republican nomination, or not, or any other nomination, or not, or wins, or not.

It's not a question of desire, or will, it's simple math. Well, maybe not entirely simple, there is the Electoral College

For US presidential elections, you don't just take your chance in the general election on election day in November. Each state has delegates that will vote according to the presidential primary elections and caucuses, and they will pick their candidate at their national convention. It's done. Already.

Like it or not (and I don't), Romney is the Republican candidate. He just is.

And here I think Romney is the very embodiment of the Republican party...
