But there is no Chinese version there!

It's quite popular in China, and we sang it seeing classmates and friends off at stations, train and bus, around college graduation.

Interesting (and only anecdotal) but in recent years Toronto has had an influx of Hakka Chinese ex India.. evidenced by lots of Hakka / Indian restaurants appearing run by ethnic Chinese.. Many have no pork menus :O)

After generations.. looking for greener pastures ?

>influx of Hakka Chinese ex India>

They are a very small community starting out of Tangra in Calcutta. (maybe just a few thousand are left in Calcutta). Their primary profession was tanning, and for some time indian-chinese restaurants and beauty parlors. But now in India every restaurant in the corner carries indian chinese food.

en.wikipedia.org

The business has gotten competitive and like other middle class indians, the Hakka chinese have sent there representatives to the western world for better fortunes. Family connections have brought them to NYC and Toronto areas. I know a few here in New Jersey and they have relatives in Tokyo that they visit regularly.

Just a few thousand puts a restaurant on every block ? :O) or is it like Montreal used be when Greeks dominated the small neighbourhood restaurant business ex Chinese restaurants..

It is interesting though as there were basically no Hakka restaurants here just a few years ago.. and no pork is not common in Chinese restaurants here until these appeared.. now they they are popping up all over.. I have gone to quite a few and always ask if they indeed come from India..

>Just a few thousand puts a restaurant on every block ?>

In 1970s there were under 5 chinese resturants in each of big indian cities. And many of these were founded by relatives of Tangra chinese from Calcutta. But those few restaurants created the taste for indian chinese food in those cities. Over the decades, indian restaurants copied the indian chinese menu and now it is part of every corner restaurant.

>It is interesting though as there were basically no Hakka restaurants here just a few years ago.. and no pork is not common in Chinese restaurants here until these appeared.. now they they are popping up all over..>

Part of the reason is that indians prefer the Indian-Hakka-chinese food compared to the food at regular chinese restaurants. So the increase in hakka chinese restaurants may reflect growing indian immigrant population.

Indian restaurants copied Makes sense.. but the restauranteurs here all seem to be ethnic Chinese so far.. I have been keeping my eyes open for a Hakka Chinese restaurant run by Indians,, BTW the menus vary in Indian influence... Nice break from the more traditional Chinese restaurants..
