RT.Samsung Telecommunications America's MP3 Phone Receives Five Star Rating from

the School of Hard Knocks; Uproar
Named ``A Consumer Phone That Any Businessperson Will Love''

Business Editors & High-Tech Writers

DALLAS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 1, 2001--Samsung's Uproar(TM), the
world's first wireless handset with downloadable music capabilities,
received the only five-star or excellent rating in the 9th Annual
Torture Test performed by Ziff Davis Smart Business Labs.
Samsung's Uproar competed in durability and usability testing
against top models from handset manufacturers such as Nokia, Ericsson,
Nextel, Mitsubishi and Kyocera. This is the second year in a row that
a wireless handset from Samsung has earned five-star honors from the
Ziff Davis publication, Smart Business: Technology at Work.
The Torture Test included dropping each phone 25 times from
heights of 39 and 66 inches, then dropping the phone into one inch of
standing water to simulate tumbling into a flowing rain gutter.
Additionally, the phones were baked in an oven at 180 degrees for two
hours and then frozen in a freezer to simulate performance in extreme
environments.
As a result of the testing, Ziff Davis Smart Business Labs named
the Uproar "a consumer phone that a businessperson will love."
Bringing Value to business and recreational users alike, Samsung's
Uproar allows consumers to download and create customized Web audio
files and listen to them while on the go.
The test also reports the Uproar is small on size but long on
features. The Uproar is a dual band/dual mode CDMA phone that weighs
in at 4.2 ounces and boasts a battery life of more than five hours.
Samsung's Uproar combines the latest in music technology with advanced
features such as e-mail capabilities, wireless Web access and
voice-activated dialing to create the ultimate four-in-one wireless
device.

Rather surprised they didn't stick a fork in it when they took it out of the oven, to see if it was done.
I hope they mean 5 hours of talk/listen time.

Intel to Order MP3 Audio Players From Eastern Asia, Paper Says

Taipei, May 2 (Bloomberg) -- Intel Corp., the largest maker of computer processors, plans to order NT$2 billion ($61 million) worth of so-called MP3 audio players from Eastern Asia Technology Ltd., the Economic Daily News reported, citing the company.

Intel may order 600,000 music players based on the MP3 digital audio signal compression standard from Eastern Asia, with shipments to start in August. Eastern Asia will supply Intel with six different models priced at between $80 and $200 each, the report said.

Eastern Asia is a Singapore-listed maker of speaker systems with shares traded as depositary receipts in Taiwan, making it the second foreign company to publicly trade on the island.
