Hey Everyone,

I went down to the new, huge Fry's Electronics Super Store in San Jose near Brokaw Road and I finally saw a demo on display of the Phillips/Magnavox WebTV box (the Sony model was there but not on display). I spent about 15 minutes experimenting with it using the remote control. For some reason they didn't have the keyboard connected at the time. For the display, it was connected to Sony's new 35 inch TV which gave a nice large picture. Anyway, it definately showed the great potential of Set Top boxes because it will allow thousands if not millions of people who normally can't afford a full PC, to now get on the Net for a mid $300 range.

The graphics were pretty good, although I thought the text could have been sharper. With the 35 inch screen, it is clear you can read the text from across a normal sized family room. I tried accessing a site with music clips but it came back with an error message saying it wasn't able to load it or something like that. I wonder if the Phillips model is compatible for Real Audio, Shockwave, etc.

I did ask one sales clerk in the computer section of the building (on the other side of the building) if they were selling many WebTV boxes.
His response was No. I'm sure it's going to take awhile for these set top boxes to take off. I know Fry's was a little slow getting the demo going. With the additional features the Curtis Mathis model is bringing, and with a good advertizing campaign, they have a good chance getting a foot in the door on this product.

Keep the inputs coming in everyone. I know we're all anxious to see the Curtis model come out soon.

Hi all:

So far crtm is the only one who even has an ad campaign going even if
it is small but it will get bigger. I may have to go down to what
ever store will be selling it and start hyping and selling.

Gene, the ad schedule I have shows the following which differs from your post.

10-21 5:35pm
10-22 4:19pm

Don't know which is right. The ads are also being run on the other Turner networks. I haven't been able to obtain a schedule though. I haven't seen a full ad yet. I have seen the ads for Phillips/Maganvox. Two dolphins talking about how their products will shape the future.

To All: While reading the San Antonio Express News I came across an add for the Philips/Magnavox model. It was actually a Circuit City ad. The ad featured the Webtv internet access provider. The box was priced at $329 and the keyboard at $69.99.

Looks like the big guys got a jump on our little company but thats alright. This product isn't going to just take off like a rocket. It will take several weeks before consumers actually show some interest and then sales will depend upon good marketing. I,m just glad to see the product on the store shelves. The consumer will look it over, play with it, and then compare. If our internet box compares favorably to the competitions product and management can get it on the store shelves before the second week in November we'll do just fine..

Think I'll buy more..

The CRTM unit is going to retail for $399 with the keyboard from what I'm told. If the Uniview delivers the extra features as promised it should beat the WebTV versions hands down. Let's just hope we get the retail exposure that the WebTV versions are getting.

The Sony unit was just on QVC and sold out quickly. $329 for the box and $79 for the keyboard. QVC is a perfect market for the CRTM box. Couch potatoes + 800# + credit card = instant sales.

Good info. Tim.

Don't be disappointed if we don't. Small companies like Curtis Mathes rarely get the coverage the big guys do. Last month I read an article in, I believe, US News and World Report on internet and TV. They mentioned Webtv, Sony, and Phillips but not Curtis Mathes. I was disappointed to say the least. Our marketing efforts are good but we are not getting any free press and we won't until we have a product on the shelf.

If this were a horse race it wouldn't be 6 furlongs rather a mile or better. As you probably know, in a long race the first horse out of the gate usually fades. I don't think Sony or Phillips will fade but their efforts will allow us to grab a larger share of the market. They draw more attention to a new product than a small company could. All we need to do is get the product on the shelves within the next 3 or 4 weeks to take advantage of the holiday season.

I am feeling very optimistic!

TO ALL: EARNINGS REPORT

Curtis Mathes Reports First Quarter Results

$499,000 First Quarter Profit

DALLAS, Oct. 21 /PRNewswire/ -- Curtis Mathes Holding Corp , a leader in television
technology, today announced the company's financial results for the quarter ending September 30,
1996. Curtis Mathes reported revenues of $2,090,383 for the quarter ended September 30, 1996,
versus $2,527,236 for the same quarter during the previous year. The net profit for the period was
$498,913, or $0.02 earnings per share, versus a net loss of $1,594,528, or $0.13 loss per share,
for the same quarter during the previous year.

"The company's first quarter net profit is attributable to several factors," said Shelton Richardson,
Curtis Mathes' chief financial officer. "First, we recognized income as a result of the deferred gain
related to the early payoff of debt, as previously reported in the company's June 30, 1996, Form
10-K. Secondly, our financing costs were lowered significantly due to the elimination of the previous
line of credit which was replaced with a more favorable line of credit. Lastly, the reduction of payroll
and related expenses through the streamlining of our workforce, and continued productivity
increases due to the consolidation of operations were also contributors to the company's first
quarter profitability."

Richardson continued: "The company's cash position has never been stronger. Curtis Mathes has
successfully concluded the raising of all outstanding private placements of its common stock and has
no immediate plans, or need, for any further offerings at this time. At present, the company is
prepared to move forward as new products are introduced to the marketplace."

This quarterly release may include forward-looking statements that may or may not materialize.
Additional information on factors that could potentially affect the company's financial results may be
found in the company's filings with the Securities and Exchange Commission.
