Nokia relaunches Weather Channel app for Windows Phone, adds augmented reality
By Daniel Bader on July 30, 2012 at 5:31pm in Mobile News

mobilesyrup.com

Nokia’s app exclusivity for Windows Phone continues today with a re-launch of The Weather Channel app. Now just called ‘Weather’, Lumia users can update to version 2.0 exclusively for six months, bringing some fantastic new features to the app like augmented reality and custom alerts.

The augmented reality stuff won’t work on the Lumia 610 (we tried) but for all other Lumias it uses the camera to show you weather-related photos that users submitted using the company’s iWitness feature. We’ve had a pretty uneventful some weather-wise here in Toronto, but there have been a couple spectacular storms that would have had a lot of user-taken photos.

The other part the app is called ‘My Amazing Day’ and it revolves around custom alerts based for pollen, UV levels, running and swimming conditions and more. You can also see your Facebook friends’ weather based on where they live, and see any updates they’ve made if they use the app as well.

Weather Channel 2.0 should be rolling out today across the Windows Phone Marketplace, so check back if it’s not there and you have a Lumia smartphone.

After hitting record low Nokia shares run up 40% in last 2 weeks
July 31, 2012 | By Surur

wmpoweruser.com

Something very out of the ordinary is happening to Nokia’s share price these last 2 weeks – it is going up.

After hitting lows it last saw in the 1990’s, the share price has rallied from $1.69 on the 17th to $2.35 today, a whole 39% over the course of around 14 days.

The reason for the boost is not really clear, but it may be that investors feel that the worst is now behind the company, and that their fears related to the lack of a WP8 upgrade to current handsets have not been realized after all.

$2.35 is of course still very far their peak of $56.06 in April 2002, but at least the company is moving away from their other record, the record low of the last decade 2 weeks ago.

Do our readers think the company can make it back into the teens? Let us know below.

Thanks Milad for the tip.

Nokia (NOK) Higher as Insiders Make Large Purchases Ahead of Windows Phone 8

goo.gl  (the original streetinsider URL was ridiculously long)

Nokia (NYSE: NOK) shares are ticking higher Tuesday morning following reports that company executives are gaining further confidence in a potential rebound.

According to the WSJ, CEO Steven Elop and several directors have purchased over 1 million of Nokia common since last week.

Elop acquired 275,000 shares, bringing total holdings to 425,000, while new Chairman Risto Siilasmaa bought 333,000 shares.

Executives are buying while the stock is down in anticipation of Microsoft's (Nasdaq: MSFT) Windows Phone 8 debuting later this year.

Since hitting an annual high of $7.38 last October, Nokia has been depressed as investors pinned little hope on Windows Phone 7 or its strategy moving forward.

Nokia ended Monday's session up 2.8 percent and is indicated about 5 percent higher Tuesday morning.

Nokia today posted series of four videos documenting “Conversations between designers about their and design’s role on future”. Marko Ahtisaari is one of the designers shown in the conversations. Nokia 808 PureView gets Gold award from dpreview
August 1, 2012 | By Liwen Guo

wmpoweruser.com

The Nokia 808 PureView has been available for about a month now, depending on where you live, and as such, it has already been reviewed quite a few times. With its standout feature being the 41 megapixel camera, we’ve also seen some photography-centric tests from the likes of CNET, who compared the 808 to a Panasonic Lumix LX5 high-end compact camera. A much more detailed and comprehensive review, however, has now been published by renowned photography site dpreview, which focuses exclusively on the camera.

They note that image quality is generally very good, with “excellent detail resolution in all modes”. Even at the maximum 38 megapixel setting, pixel-level image quality is “up there with some of the best cameras around”, at least with low ISO. While higher ISO settings produce noticeably worse results with the full resolution, the scaled-down 8 megapixel PureView mode is still able to match and even exceed most compact cameras. The biggest issue in regards to image quality seems to be highlight clipping, which results in a limited dynamic range compared to ‘real’ cameras.

In the end, the 808 received a Gold award, being lauded as the “most important breakthrough in mobile photography” since the smartphone era. We highly recommend you to read the full review on dpreview, which includes lots of sample pictures and an interesting interview with Juha Alakarhu, head of imaging technologies at Nokia.

Since Lumia PureView Windows Phones are expected to be introduced at Nokia World on September 5, have any of our readers already decided what phone to get next?

(I know I have.)

Cash position... being "preserved" at the expense of real asset reduction... is what we've been saying they been doing... NOK is "shrinking" at faster pace than many want to acknowledge...

Nokia ask for dealer support as it aims to be “disruptive force”
August 3, 2012 | By Surur

wmpoweruser.com

At a Nokia partner conference held recently with 120 Nokia dealers Nokia vice president of Western Europe Conor Pierce asked Nokia’s partners to help the company become a disruptive force in the market.

Pierce said: “We want to become a disruptive force in the market, but not just a reckless force landing something almighty on the market, we need to be very clever about how we do it.

“They are quite strong words, but we are now a challenger brand and we can do things differently.”

He noted that after losing its 10 year phone leadership to Samsung the company was now free to do things differently, and appealed to dealers to get behind its push to once again become the number one player in the smartphone market.

Pierce said Nokia was happy with the progress of Nokia’s new Windows Phone strategy but said sales are not where they should be.

Calling the Nokia Lumia 800 “great start”, he insisted the company could and will do better.

“Almost half of the UK population is aware of Lumia,” he said. “Is it enough? No, it’s not. Do they consider it? Many do. Are they buying? Many do. Do enough people buy? No, they don’t. We’ll continue to drive the awareness and build the consideration through yourselves, retail and call centres.

“We have driven the business, but is it enough? No, it’s not. We’re a big machine, we need big numbers and we’ll get them.

“We have a great portfolio, great partnership with Microsoft and a great start but that won’t make any difference unless we as individuals, and Nokia as a company, do something radically different. It’s about knowing what we need to do and doing it fast, but not recklessly.

Nokia World Windows Phone 8 rumours push Nokia’s shares higher
August 6, 2012 | By Surur

wmpoweruser.com

Nokia’s shares closed today at $2.51, a whole 50% higher than the recent 18 year low of $1.69 on the 17th July.

The main driver for the increasingly volatile stock is likely rumours of an earlier than expected Windows Phone 8 handset announcement at Nokia World 2012 on the 5-6 September, in around 1 month’s time.

Nokia is expected to announce two Windows Phone 8 handsets there, and Bloomberg has added some corroboration to the rumour.

For the sake of Nokia’s share holders we hope the run up continues, but it is still a long way from the $11 mark of February 2011.

Nokia Spins Out Qt to Digia ...

>> Digia to Acquire Qt from Nokia

Digia Plc
Helsinki, Finland and Santa Clara, US
August 9th 2012,

digia.com

Digia, the software powerhouse listed on the NASDAQ OMX Helsinki exchange (DIG1V), today announced that it has signed an agreement to acquire Qt software technologies and Qt business from Nokia. Following the acquisition Digia becomes responsible for all the Qt activities formerly carried out by Nokia. These include product development, as well as the commercial and open source licensing and service business. Following the acquisition, Digia plans to quickly enable Qt on Android, iOS and Windows 8 platforms.

One of Digia’s key objectives with this acquisition is to improve its position within the Qt ecosystem by further strengthening Qt’s R&D capabilities and expanding its reach on many more platforms than ever before. Since Digia acquired the Qt Commercial licensing business from Nokia in March 2011, the operation has continued to be successful and has grown substantially. Digia forecasts the acquisition’s impact on its 2012 revenues to be positive. In the following years, Digia forecasts the Qt business to grow. As part of the transaction, a maximum of 125 Qt people from Nokia will transfer to Digia, mostly based in Oslo, Norway and Berlin, Germany. This business transaction will significantly strengthen Digia’s product business and supports Digia's strategic objective to grow internationally.

Digia encourages all current ecosystem members to continue working on improving Qt with full confidence in Digia’s continued investment to make Qt the leading cross-platform development framework. Digia will work with ecosystem members to secure a successful release of Qt5 and is committed to continuing the Qt Project in order to maintain Qt’s availability under both open source and commercial licenses.

“We are looking forward to welcoming the Qt team to Digia. By adding this world class organization to our existing team we plan to build the next generation leading cross-platform development environment.” said Tommi Laitinen, SVP, International Products, Digia. “Now is a good time for everyone to revisit their perception of Qt. Digia’s targeted R&D investments will bring back focus on Qt’s desktop and embedded platform support, while widening the support for mobile operating systems.”

"Nokia is proud of the contributions we've made to Qt over the past four years. We are pleased that we've been able to work with Digia to secure continued development of Qt by the current core team," said Sebastian Nyström, head of Nokia Strategy. "Digia's plans to acquire Qt mean that it can continue as a successful open source project and also offer continuing employment for many people in the community."

Qt has been used by over 450,000 developers and thousands of leading companies worldwide in over 70 industries to power the most innovative, mission-critical and renowned applications and UIs. Qt Commercial is a leader in a number key market segments including automotive, medical, advanced visualization & animation, industrial automation and aerospace & defense. In the future, Digia expects that Qt will have a key role bringing world-class user experience and user interfaces to embedded systems and consumer electronics.

More information will be available shortly on qt.digia.com and qt-project.org which will be the main information-sharing sites for Qt. ###
