"It's clear that Intel's compilers didn't execute certain instructions on AMD processors. What is not clear is why."

Therefore i would touch this compiler with a ten foot pole.

I tried and it wasnt worth the problems you could encounter,
inline assembler and some other things didnt work as with MS Compiler. Normally there are only a few tight inner loops to optimize manually.

Nobody in his right mind would ship a CD or a download game compiled with Intel-Compiler because there have been often many compatibility issues. If you have enough money maybe one could try to make two versions one for Intel and one for AMD-CPU with different compilers. But coupled with the normal tight deadlines, it just a nogo.

HPC maybe, but not for distributed software.

Mr Jelly,

Re: "AMD appears to have the more recent "mis-steps" ..." Correct. There is no
predicting when these things occur. Except that they will occur."

Well maybe as a "thread" we could try to predict the next AMD "mis-step".

My prediction is that the GloFo spin-off will be seen as a "mis-step" when it becomes clear
that the GloFo 32nm process has slipped schedule and/or is not competitive in
performance to INTC's 32nm process.

A secondary GloFo spin-off concern will be the impact on AMD earnings due to higher manufacturing
costs than before.

Others want to take a stab at predicting the next AMD "mis-step"??

Not exactly a high risk prediction. It's like predicting it'll be hot in Phoenix in July. Can anyone document a single instance of AMD ever being on time with a new process release? I don't think it's ever happened.

BTW, no fair pointing to a re-re-rescheduled release.

Elmer,

Re: "Not exactly a high risk prediction. It's like predicting it'll be hot in Phoenix in July."

My second prediction (even less risky) was that AMD would post another quarterly loss. <ggg>

And yet their products continue to outperform the competition, while costing less to buy and less to run, both short term and long term.

Maybe doing it right instead of shipping to a deadline isn't a completely bad idea...

Of course they outperform the competition in your universe. Perhaps they even make a profit there as well. Over here, anyone can sell the cheapest chip. It takes no special talent. Just a constant stream of suckers willing to fund a loser.

Sorry, Phud, I've already posted links that confirm what I claimed.
