BEIJING, July 22 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- QUALCOMM Incorporated (Nasdaq: QCOM - News), pioneer and world leader of Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) digital wireless technology, congratulates China Unicom (NYSE: CHU - News) on its announcement of the expansion of CDMA 1X commercial BREW(TM)-enabled services, and the introduction in three cities of location-based services using QUALCOMM's gpsOne(TM) Assisted-Global Positioning System (A-GPS) wireless location technology for mobile phones and other wireless devices. Unicom's subscribers will have a wireless service unmatched in China: the ability to download applications and services over the air, virtually anytime using QUALCOMM's solution on BREW-enabled handsets; and access to a range of services powered by QUALCOMM's position-location solution on gpsOne-enabled handsets in Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou, all delivered over China Unicom's high-speed CDMA 1X data network.
BREW-based services have been available through China Unicom in Shanghai city since January 2003 and in the Guangdong Province since May 2003. Now, even more China Unicom subscribers will enjoy the ability to personalize their mobile phones with an array of fun and useful game, entertainment, communications and business productivity applications. There are 10 BREW- enabled handsets -- from Samsung, LG, Kyocera, Sanyo, Daxion and Haier -- currently being offered to China Unicom subscribers, and all use QUALCOMM's CDMA wireless chipset solutions.
Unicom's introduction of QUALCOMM's gpsOne solution, featuring SnapTrack® technology, complements its BREW services launch, creating a unique wireless services package of downloadable precision location applications that is unmatched in China. The gpsOne A-GPS technology combines GPS satellite signals and ranging information from mobile base stations to pinpoint the location of a handset or other device, even inside buildings and high-density urban environments. The highly accurate gpsOne solution is the world's most widely deployed location system for mobile phones with proven industry leading accuracy and performance. The performance and established success of QUALCOMM's gpsOne solution are key reasons for its selection by China Unicom. China Unicom's Guomai "I Go Go" BREW-based gpsOne applications include Find Myself, Get Directions, Follow the Map, Find Points of Interest, Get Transportation and Find a Restaurant.
"gpsOne solutions, delivered over Unicom's advanced CDMA 1X network, will enable a wide variety of on-demand safety, service, navigation and entertainment-related applications that are both practical and important to consumers," said Jing Wang, senior vice president of QUALCOMM and chairman of QUALCOMM China. "The combination of BREW and gpsOne places China Unicom at the forefront of carriers worldwide, and provides subscribers in China with a world-class selection of wireless services."
"QUALCOMM will continue to work together with Unicom and its branches to generate a dynamic and prolific BREW and gpsOne developer community by hosting joint developer training sessions," continued Wang. "The combination of BREW and gpsOne is a unique and powerful enabler of services, and we are aggressively reaching out to content providers and developers to introduce them to gpsOne capabilities and to the consumer and enterprise opportunities precise location-based technologies represent. China is one of the world's fastest growing and most important wireless markets and these services will enable China Unicom to further differentiate itself from the competition."
