Hands-on with Kyobo color e-reader using Qualcomm's mirasol display

(video available at link)

tweaktown.com

Earlier on today we attended a Qualcomm media roundtable in Taipei where we were introduced to a partner product of theirs from a Korean bookstore company called Kyobo.

Kyobo is famous in Korea and its digital catalog includes some 90,000 titles including regular ebooks, children's books, video books and video lectures. With almost a 100% literacy rate and an aggressive government very keen on high levels of education and parents with enough deposable income for youth learning gadgets, Korea is a perfect market for Qualcomm to spread its wings and work with its partners to bundle its mirasol display technology on mobile products.

The result of said above is the launch of the first color e-reader featuring Qualcomm's mirasol display tech. Mirasol is different to that of LCD, LED or plasma in that there are no harmful chemicals used in the production of the display and there is no back light, which some consider harmful to human eyes over extended periods of use. Mirasol reflects natural ambient light in your surrounding and uses it to create the color display. So, you aren't going to get the same quality display as LCD, but Qualcomm are not trying to compete with LCD and mirasol displays use less power. This is only going to result in a device with longer battery life at the end of the day.

The Kyobo e-reader features a 5.7-inch display with a 1024 x 768 resolution and is powered by Qualcomm's 1GHz Snapdragon S2 processor. By default it ships with Android 2.3 and a select few Android apps. It is able to provide basic web surfing with built-in Wi-Fi and it supports standard definition video playback up to 40 frames per second. As mentioned by Qualcomm, it's important to remember this device is not a tablet and was never designed to be. It is a device designed for students which offers adequate educational interactivity in my opinion.

It is already on sale now in Korea for $349,000 KRW ($310 USD) and if you are a member of the Kyobo Platinum Book Club it can be picked up for 299,000 KRW ($265 USD). This device is only going to be sold in Korea, which may be a disappointment to some, but this video above also goes a long way to showing us what type of other devices we can expect to see using mirasol display technology from Qualcomm next year, which is said to be a busy time for new products for the San Diego based firm.

Clearwire green-lights LTE build by raising $734 million

By Kevin Fitchard Dec. 13, 2011, 3:32pm PT

http://gigaom.com/broadband/clearwire-green-lights-lte-build-by-raising-734-million/

That was quick. One day after announcing the final details to its public offering, Clearwire has closed on the stock deal, raising $402.5 million in new funds, which immediately triggered its agreement with Sprint to kick in $331.4 million equity investment so it can maintain its near-majority stake in the WiMAX operator. What’s next? Why building its new LTE network, of course.

Clearwire said it would use the funds for operations and maintenance as well as new network construction, but the first priority on its list must be starting the rollout of its time-division LTE network (TD-LTE). Clearwire has said it needs $600 million to overlay TD-LTE in its current 72-market WiMAX footprint. After paying fees to its underwriters, Clearwire will have $715.5 million in the bank – enough to build phase one and give Sprint the capacity it needs to supplement its own LTE network when it finally launches in 2012. Here’s what Clearwire president and CEO Erik Prusch had to say in a statement:

“This equity raise is a critical step for Clearwire to achieve its long-term business plan of creating the first wide-channel TDD-LTE 4G network in the U.S The added resources will enable us to continue delivering 4G mobile broadband service to meet the rapidly growing demand in the industry. We remain ideally and uniquely positioned to serve both wholesale and retail customers well into the future.”

Wholesale customer is more like it. The new TD-LTE network will be limited to hot zones and won’t cover entire cities, which is perfect for Sprint’s 4G plans but not exactly ideal for any wholesale customer without an LTE network of its own. But as I detailed in my recent Sprint-Clearwire analysis, Clearwire has the resources to build Sprint one hell of network – it just needs the cash.

Slacker,

Thanks for keeping us abreast of hands-on reviews of the Kyobo Mirasol ereader. On the video at the 3:25 minute mark, it sounds like the Tweaktown reviewer asks Cheryl Goodman if the display is running at full video at 40 frames per second....to which she responded affirmatively. The written article also states that Mirasol supports standard definition video at 40 fps. I had always thought that the targeted video frame rate was 30 fps. In my quick search of the Mirasol website, I didn't see any call out of this specification but I recall prior articles referencing a 30 fps. I'll have to drill down some more on this, but if I heard the reviewer's inquiry correctly, the video frame rate is higher than I expected initially...or perhaps Ms. Goodman didn't catch the 40 fps cited in the inquiry. Overall the display looks pretty good although the colors are a bit muted. However, I'd be willing to give up some color quality just to gain some ability to read the screen outdoors without having to use my hands to shield the screen on my cellphone. --Ryhack.

I love it. I want one. I don't need an iPad as I really love my Vaio with SSD but would really like a compact reader to travel with and be able to read in all lightening situations. It would fit perfectly as a thrid device between my smartphone, which can be hard on the eyes and difficult in sunlight, and a true computer experience like a laptop or PC, which I have great screens for sitting inside.

One more video and the presenter explicitly states that it supports 40fps.

I do not get it. Why did she not demo Mirasol outside in the open space. WIFI should be readily available outside on the street as well. Hmmmm.

>>I do not get it. Why did she not demo Mirasol outside <<

Doesn't this just drive you nuts! One of the strongest differentiation/selling points and not mentioned!
You wait and wait for someone to bring it up, then u start to think, surely
they won't be so stupid as to not mention it, and then they don't.
