It's a good article. Plus they do a little sub-article on Bernie.

John, Business Week is on-line. The url for the article is businessweek.com

There are a few other items related to the article; those should be easy to find once you click to the main article.

Wiz,

Thanks for the Value Point Analysis post. Do you recommend any other sites for TA?

Sold about 35% of my Loral position since I think it's going to take longer than I expected for the stock to go up. Because Hughes just sold off its non-satellite businesses, it is now a totally focused, direct competitor to Loral. The Telstar loss was a temporary setback although the Skynet purchase price will be consequently reduced.

Loral still has key strengths going for it, though. SS/L's reputation benefitted as China contracted Loral to build a satellite after their rocket with a Hughes one blew up. See biz.yahoo.com  Also, Loral's CEO expects 2 billion in revenue in 1997 and 2.5 billion in revenue in 1998. (Source: The Heard on the Street column, Jan. 22). Moreover, Loral's intellectual capital is a valuable asset.

John, I don't think Lockheed's participation in Iridium will have much impact on LOR either way. Lockheed's investment in LOR is significant enough that they will want LOR to make money on it despite their interest in Iridium. At LOR, Bernard Schwartz runs the show. I don't think he will listen too hard to any boardmembers from Lockheed who appear to be trying to limit LOR's competitiveness. And Mr. Schwartz, I believe, will be shielded from participating in Lockheed decisions regarding its satellite business.

I've been seriously thinking of buying LOR, but I've been wondering, if much of the future value of LOR is due to its stake in Globalstar, why not buy Globalstar Telecomm. (GSTRF) directly? In fact GSTRF has outperformed LOR significantly over the last few months moving from a low of 31 in August to about 66 recently. Or am I totally missing something here?
