Hi John,

Any thoughts on what to look for in terms of comparing the three main companies(GNSS, SAGI and SIMG) in this new emerging field?

My thoughts are general ones. Start with the product and follow it to their customers. Who are their Customers, what design wins do they own, How many applications, etc. Do they manufacture or out source? Are sales and revenues consistent? What is the estimated market and what is their share? Management qualifications?

My own DD is rough at best. I pretty well find every thing on the net that I can and dump what I feel is important to a word doc. I'm not tech minded so I tend to follow the basics. I had intended over a year ago to come up with a "foot print" to follow but found I was spending to much time at it.

It would be nice if we had access to some decent reports on a consistent basis. Do you have any you can recommend?

What should we look for to see which one is emerging as the leader.
I have been able to travel about once a month this year and I see the "Flat Screens" in every commercial space I visit. Maybe a basket of the three would be the best approach, I don't know.

What reasons do you have for leaning towards SAGI? Do you think that with SAGI or for all three of them that their price is in a range for accumulation? I see on AV's report that GNSS & SIMG are in a proposed Buy Zone, FWIW.

Hi NC,

Thxs for passing on the info and the link. I'll wonder over to the Star and read the existing questions to see if I might have one worthy of asking. I note that it pertains to "The Communication Fund (TCFQX)" only.

Have you posted any?

I emailed Firsthand a general one back a couple of months ago and received a general answer in reply. Didn't do either one of us much good.

I actually made some money off gnss when I sold at the end of last year at around $26. I sold becuase as I was listening to what I heard on the confrence call and I did not feel comfortable with GNSS as the technology shifted and were not sure if they can dominate the new technology like they did with the old. I guess I liked SAGI partly on the basis that no one company has dominated the market yet and SAGI looks about as strong as the other two but has a much lower market cap which might mean high return. I also liked this PR sageinc.com which they say they dominate the digital interface flat panel market. Not sure if this is the same market that all three are fighting for and not too much a tech guy either. Still have not bought any of the three since have other safer protential(COMS, CEGE,...) stocks looking at.

It's hard to pick out the "key words" on some of the Press releases. This one from GNSS is similar (I think) to the one you posted for SAGI.

biz.yahoo.com

Wonder if Firsthand made that last large purchase because of this impending press release? Or maybe it was one of the others?

biz.yahoo.com
biz.yahoo.com
biz.yahoo.com

What about SIMG, they are in the race also?

biz.yahoo.com
biz.yahoo.com
biz.yahoo.com

And what does SAGI have to say?
biz.yahoo.com
biz.yahoo.com

This is all very interesting and the 1st question that comes to mind is "Which one of these company's if any, make the chips etc." for the flip up panels that we see on all the Digital/Video camera's on the market today? Just a thought.

I haven't posted yet but plan to. As a disclaimer, i forgot to mention i'm a tifqx shareholder and a mstar employee. Yeah, officially, its the portfolio management team of the communications fund rather than Landis specifically. And they can't guarantee answering every single question. But I look forward to any insight they can offer.

No relation to Johnny Lemonhead. Is that a real name or handle like mine?

Pretty good questions over at Morning Star, most have drifted off of TCFQX. I would have to be basic. Like the ATT? The top ten holdings as of the end of March are:

T AT&T Corp. 1,275,000 $56.25 $71,718,750 8.6%
VTSS Vitesse Semiconductor Corp. 500,000 $96.25 $48,125,000 5.8%
VSTR Voicestream 300,000 $128.81 $38,643,750 4.6%
CNCX Concentric Network Corp. 599,750 $55.00 $32,986,250 4.0%
LVLT Level 3 Communications 304,600 $105.75 $32,211,450 3.9%
FIBR Osicom Technologies 286,500 $112.25 $32,159,625 3.9%
FNSR Finisar Corp. 185,000 $146.51 $27,105,390 3.3%
WCG Williams Communications Group 528,000 $51.81 $27,357,000 3.3%
AFCI Advanced Fibre Communications, Inc. 400,000 $62.68 $25,075,000 3.0%
QCOM QUALCOMM, Inc. 165,000 $149.31 $24,636,562 3.0%

Why?

Johnny Lemonhead is a really hilarious cartoon character at www.redmeat.com I don't really follow AT&T so I dunno about their thinking on that.

Both SAGI and GNSS has fallen sharply(especially sagi) since last time we spoke about them. Any change you see in either company or industry prospects?

I took a small position in SAGI today at 8 1/8.

Hi John,

No as I stated before the group seams to come out with similar announcements and PR. Probably okay to flip a coin or throw a dart. AIM had me add 15% more to my GNSS position at the close.

While at the Money Show in Vegas I noticed that the new fad was the dual flat panel screens. And then when I got back I saw a related press release from GNSS...

biz.yahoo.com

At $25 a chip I don't see a big rump up in Revenue, but it's one more bottle of Wine on the shelf.

Did you see the memo about Firsthand funds charging a 2% redemption fee after 07-01-00?
