Universal Display Announces Advances in Blue Phosphorescent OLED Technology at 8th Annual Needham & Company Growth Conference

Company achieves 100,000 hour lifetime for sky blue PHOLED and unveils deeper blue PHOLED as key milestones on the path towards commercialization

EWING, N.J.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 12, 2006--Universal Display Corporation (NASDAQ:PANL - News), the Company that's lighting the way in developing and commercializing OLED technology for flat panel displays, lighting and other opto-electronics with its proprietary phosphorescent OLED (PHOLED(TM)) technology, will discuss the significant progress in the color blue for its industry leading PHOLED technology during the 8th Annual Needham & Company Growth Conference, being held today at the Palace Hotel in New York.

Sidney Rosenblatt, Chief Financial Officer of Universal Display Corporation, in a presentation titled "Changing the Display Landscape through Phosphorescent OLEDs," will announce the achievement of key technological milestones in the Company's development of blue PHOLED materials and technology. Universal Display's new blue PHOLED system with sky blue color of CIE (0.16, 0.37) now offers luminous efficiency of 20 candelas per ampere (cd/A) and 100,000 hours of operating lifetime at 200 candelas per square meter (cd/m2). This follows the Company's breakthrough announcement in June, 2005 of a sky blue PHOLED with over 15,000 hours at 200 cd/m2. That was the first significant blue PHOLED to break through the 1,000 hour lifetime barrier.

The Company has also made significant progress in the demonstration of deeper blue performance. Mr. Rosenblatt will present a proprietary new blue PHOLED with CIE (0.16, 0.29), excellent luminous efficiency of 21 cd/A and over 17,500 hours of operating lifetime at 200 cd/m2. This corresponds to over 3,000 hours at 500 cd/m2, a target luminance for commercial applications.

CDT Acquires Important New Patent Portfolio

CAMBRIDGE, England, Feb. 13 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Cambridge Display Technology (CDT) (Nasdaq: OLED - News) announced today that it has acquired an important portfolio of patent rights from Maxdem Inc. The portfolio includes five US patent applications and their foreign equivalents relating to new light emitting polymer compositions and applications. The deal also includes a license to a large number of patents / applications relating to polyphenylene polymers and other polymer compositions and purification methods. These are expected to be useful in future materials improvements.
The acquisition will also strengthen what CDT believes to be its already dominant patent position in solution processable OLED materials and devices.

Included in the acquisition from Maxdem is a patent application for the invention of phosphorescent compositions containing a critical class of polymer materials in combination with metals / metal ions. CDT believes this provides a fundamental position in the use of conjugated polymers to achieve high efficiency phosphorescent emission in solution processable devices, whether for ink jet printing or any other means of solution processing.

In due course, the acquired rights will be transferred to Sumation(TM), which will incorporate this new technology into its materials development activity. Sumation has shown remarkable progress in materials performance since CDT formed this joint venture with Sumitomo Chemical in November 2005.

Notes:
1. CDT believes that any solution processable material whether fluorescent
or phosphorescent will require the use of conjugated polymers and will
therefore fall within its fundamental patents. In addition, CDT also
holds the important patent rights on the use of dendrimers in OLEDs,
and holds licensing rights to the key Seiko Epson patents relating to
ink jet printing in relation to any OLED containing a conjugated
polymer. With the Maxdem acquisition, CDT believes that it will now be
able to control the use of metal / metal ions in combination with key
polymers.

2. CDT notes that UDC has recently announced the grant of its US patent
No. 6,982,179, titled "Structure and Method of Fabricating Organic
Devices". CDT believes that this patent is limited to standard methods
of creating patterned multilayer devices by solution processing, such
methods being fully described in prior patents belonging to CDT or
within its control.

World's First OLED Print Head Uses Polymer Technology

CAMBRIDGE, England, March 16 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Cambridge Display Technology (CDT) [Nasdaq: OLED] welcomes the announcement of what is believed to be the world's first OLED (organic light emitting diode) print head.

The announcement by Seiko Epson Corporation ("Epson") reveals that Epson has succeeded in creating a print head that uses OLED as a high brightness light source, opening the way for utilization of OLED as a new technology for printers, and potentially leading to the manufacture of color printers that are smaller, have higher resolution and faster printing speeds.

Epson was one of the first licensees of CDT's P-OLED technology, and their latest work is based on many years of experience of OLED technology for both displays and lighting. According to the announcement, Epson has developed a super-bright OLED by working with Sumitomo Chemical Co Ltd., who supplied the polymer material used in the development. Sumitomo is a joint venture partner of CDT in the development and manufacture of P-OLED materials.

Epson stated that it plans to step up its efforts in research and development to realize the full potential of OLED.

Current copiers and laser printers use LED or laser light sources, but this breakthrough will pave the way for the manufacture of a new generation of color printers. Polymer technology is proving to be a highly capable platform in demanding applications, and could prove highly suited for eventual use in such products as copiers, scanners and printers.

The successful development of thin, light and highly precise light sources significantly extends the range of applications that OLEDs can address beyond displays and into other fields which may require very high brightness levels or high operating temperatures. The TMD 21" P-OLED television with CDT Technology

The super-thin display is based on TMD's LTPS technology coupled with CDT's light emitting polymer technology. The three (RGB) color-emitting layers use polymer organic electroluminescent materials, or P-OLEDs, and an ink-jet type printing process is used for deposition of each color.

Everything had a good day yesterday with the Fed's 50 bp rate cut. PANL has not broken out and its LT price performance has been mediocre. bigcharts.marketwatch.com 

CREE and CLRK have done somewhat better, but none of these stocks have exhibited spectacular price performance.

I guess this is why the board has not been more active.

PANL.. Weekly bull flag and the trend is up, daily is still neutral .. I like the volume pattern and am monitoring for now.

many sites do not allow direct links to their graphics .. (stockcharts.com for example)

and so I recommend using reg.imageshack.us  as a hosting service.. add the firefox extension, and then you can simply right click on an image to upload it to their server, then grab the url at the bottom of the resulting page, and paste it into the code as described above

alternatively, 'imageshack quickshot v1.52' will allow you to take a screen shot of any portion of a given page, and then upload from there... which is handy when you only care to display a portion of a web based image. Also, if a desired graphic is on your hard-drive, or from a standalone chart package (quotetracker, qcharts, etc), one can simply capture the screen, find the image in your computer's directory, right click and then upload to imageshack.. then take the resulting URL and put it within the code as indicated above

[for screen captures, gadwin.com  has a great utility. This might all sound confusing, but if you get it set up correctly, embedding charts here on SI is only about a 15 second process]
