Yet Globalstar was talking about going commercial in 1998, and is now saying 1999. Will they really?
I have little new on Globalstar here in Brazil. Do you know of any site (besides their own) that is knowledgeable on them?

Rituxan now available for Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma.

16 December 1997 Genentech and IDEC Pharmaceuticals Corporation announced that RITUXAN [Rituximab] is being shipped today to the oncology medical community. Rituxan was cleared for marketing by the US Food and Drug Administration on 26 November 1997.

IDEC invented Rituxan and developed the product in collaboration with Genentech, F Hoffmann-La Roche Ltd of Switzerland and Zenyaku Kogyo Co Ltd. of Japan. IDEC and Genentech will promote Rituxan in the United States and have shared responsibility for product manufacture. Roche will market the product under the tradename MabThera in the rest of world, excluding Japan.

Genentech Inc. discovers, develops, manufactures and markets human pharmaceuticals. Eleven of the currently marketed biotechnology products stem from Genentech science. Genentech markets eight biotechnology products in the United States.

IDEC Pharmaceuticals focuses on developing targeted immunotherapies for the treatment of cancer and autoimmune disease which are primarily designed to act through immune mechanisms.

It seems that Rituxan is good for low grade NHLs, B-cell, CD20 antigen expressing follicular and other types, but not so hot for intermediate and high grade NHLs. Though still somewhat effective. Why isn't it effective on intermediate B-cells, large and diffuse if they are have CD20? Beats me.

Affymetrix makes headway as the best means of investigating gene expression levels. This announcement on diabetes related issues. Same sort of thing applies to non Hodgkins Lymphoma P33 expression and CD20 I guess.

At the moment, Non Hodgkins Lymphoma [NHL] is diagnosed and monitored using stone age macro tools such as gazing at cells through a microscope, Computer Aided Tomography and palpation of spleen! Roll on the 21st century.

-------------------------------------------------------------------
On 17 December Affymetrix Inc. AFFX and Metabolex Inc. a private biotechnology company, announced they have agreed that Metabolex will gain access to Affymetrix GeneChip arrays to monitor gene expression for use in research and development activities.

Under the agreement, Affymetrix will supply Metabolex with GeneChip software and human DNA probe arrays to monitor specific gene expression levels. Affymetrix will also provide screening services for Metabolex. In exchange for supplying Metabolex with its GeneChip technology, Affymetrix will receive undisclosed payments based on a per-data-point pricing model. Additional financial terms were not disclosed.

"Our agreement with Metabolex demonstrates that Affymetrix GeneChip technology is a viable, cost-effective tool for biotechnology companies," said Dr Stephen P A Fodor, Affymetrix President and Chief Executive Officer. "Our goal is to make the technology broadly available to companies of all sizes with an interest in genomics."

"Access to GeneChip technology will provide us with unique insight into the development and function of diabetes related tissues,
including beta cells, the pancreatic cells that produce insulin," said Thomas A. Glaze, President and Chief Executive Officer of
Metabolex. "By identifying changes in the patterns of gene expression, we may help to identify new targets for drug therapy which enhance the function of beta cells and thus overcome the defects found in type 2 diabetes."

Additional customers of the GeneChip technology include: Genetics Institute, Glaxo, Hoechst Marion Roussel Inc, Merck & Co Inc., the Parke-Davis division of the Warner Lambert Company, Pfizer Inc, Pioneer Hi-Bred International and F Hoffmann-La Roche Ltd.

Affymetrix has developed and intends to establish its GeneChip system as the platform of choice for acquiring, analyzing and managing complex genetic information in order to improve the diagnosis, monitoring and treatment of disease. The company's GeneChip system consists of disposable DNA probe arrays containing gene sequences on a chip, reagents for use with the probe arrays, a scanner and other instruments to process the probe arrays and software to analyze and manage genetic information.

Metabolex Inc. was founded to develop therapeutics for diabetes and related metabolic diseases.

Bennett, re Geron, telomerase, anticancer and today's announcement by GERN of telomerase activity induced in normal human cells.

"I think Cholchicine functions in cells that way or, quite similarly. Slows down cancer but, the side effects, as usual, are nothing to write home about."

I guess Cholchicine is not a human produced chemical then. But it seems likely that there is a mechanism to stop telemerase acting so cancer cells die off.

What is fascinating is that built into quarks, protons, electrons and those other little things is sufficient code to make everything. I guess they have code for non-cancer getting, long-living DNA with pretty good brain function able to produce even more amazing Si and Ga processing. And more?

[I've been doing too much off topic lately so thought I come over to my thinking about it bio-base].

"Lastly, I agree that in a 2cm node the use of Radiation (XRT) is probably not indicated in most cases." Well, that isn't what they think for Tarken. They say radiation is necessary [with some dissenting opinion] to back up 3xCHOP. Based on a recent study called "SWOG" which was reported in abstract by the American Society of Clinical Oncologists [ASCO] which said that 3 doses of CHOP plus involved field radiation is as good as 6 doses of CHOP alone.

So we are off to San Diego on Monday to see whether Rituxan will be a useful adjunct therapy for Tarken.

Hiya Don, Your post and this thread two years ago today! Doesn't time fly. A lot can happen - I hope the next couple of years is, ummm, more stable. I've had more ups and downs and turbulence than the rest of my life put together. With the amazing world of the Web arriving like an international Woodstock, consuming all in its path.

Loral is way over your $20 sell price. Globalstar has gone through the roof on price. The drought has been and gone no doubt and is but a distant memory. My possum pelt providers company closed. I live in the 3D world now. But the Web swoops on like some gargantuan virus consuming and transforming all.

Give me a few days and I'll be right back under control. I hope.

Just keeping the old thread alive and saying howdy, how're y'all doin'?

Maurice and others,

Perhaps this is a stupid question. Is Bill Gates Teledesic (spelling)
system in any way in competition with Globalstar ?

Thanks
JC.
