The Star-Ledger story describes "Body by Boris":

... Additionally, Chalem was a partner in two tanning salons in Fort Lee. And according to the National Association of Securities Dealers, Chalem also worked for two years for A.S. Goldmen & Co., an Iselin-based brokerage indicted in July on allegations the firm participated in a pattern of massive securities frauds that cheated thousands of investors out of nearly $100 million.

The firm, which received its mail care of Body by Boris, a Red Bank gymnasium, was charged with artificially driving stock prices up and down, charging excessive markups on stocks, using high-pressure tactics, and employing unlicensed salesmen.

Chalem was not licensed, but was not named in the federal indictment. ...

Well, to be really reductive...

--The shooting occurred for reasons having to do either with "business", or with some kind of personal dispute. If "business", was the problem a falling out with an associate--the authorities not involved--or did it have to do with testimony that had been offered, or would be offered, in one of the cases under investigation?

--Were both men intended victims, or only Chalem? The press says that the two men "worked together" in the Colts Neck house. But it's a fairly long commute from Long Island. How often did Lehmann visit?

--Why were Chalem and Lehmann shot in the dining room? Had they been working there? Had they invited their assassins to have a look at whatever it was they were doing? Or did the killers simply back them in there, off the foyer?

--Why were the victims' cell phones so handy? Nearly all the press reports describe them as being "inches from their fingers". When I'm at home, or in someone else's home, I put my cell phone down and leave it where I've put it.

--Did the victims know their killers? Hard to say. Most people check to see who's there before opening the door, and there were apparently no signs of forced entry.

--Did the victims have an appointment with their killers? Seems doubtful. They could have told someone about it, made notes in advance that the killers couldn't be sure of finding. The killers could have requested secrecy, though that in itself should have sent a warning to anyone with sense.

--The house has been described as a "gated mansion". Is there really a gate? Was it open? I assume so. Did Chalem normally leave it open during the day? Or was it left that way because someone was expected?

--It's said that both men were shot in the legs, presumably before they were shot in the head. Were they interrogated before the actual execution took place?

One more reduction....Where do the strange Dodge auto and suitcase fit in?

Hadn't Lehmann rented the Dodge? If so, presumably the suitcase was his. Perhaps he'd planned to spend a few days with Chalem in Kimberly's absence. But why would he have rented a car? He lived on Long Island, not in the city, and so would have had had to have had one of his own.

Elsewhere...I checked the Monmouth County Recorder's Office. Unfortunately their records aren't online. They might have been quite interesting...

I would not be surprised to find the location of the cell phones related simply to the frequency with which they used them. If one needs a cell phone frequently, it's more efficient to keep it close. The Star-Ledger article describes the cell phone usage as "extensive":

Detectives yesterday began delving into the extensive overseas calls both men made from their cell phones -- phones that were just inches from their bullet-riddled bodies found on the marble dining room floor of the million-dollar Colts Neck mansion where Chalem lived with his girlfriend. Investigators are seeking warrants to gather telephone records from the cellular telephone companies used by the men.

A Philadelphia Inquirer article (not previously cited on this thread?) noted the following:

The friends who found the brokers had come from North Jersey to spend the night at Chalem's house in Colts Neck, about 10 miles northwest of Asbury Park, Kaye said.

They last spoke to the two about 7:30 Tuesday night and called frequently between 8 p.m. Tuesday and 1 a.m. yesterday, when they arrived in Colts Neck to find the mansion's gates open, the front door unlocked, and Chalem and Lehmann dead on the floor, Kaye said.

The victims may have been expecting the later call and might have kept their phones close accordingly. More importantly, the above information, if accurate, may suggest time of death was between 7:30 and 8:00 (approximately). There are, of course, many other possible explanations than the deaths of the victims for the failure of the later calls to be answered (for example, the victims may have left the house, they may have not chosen to leave the calls unanswered for reasons unrelated to the crime).

On another subject:

One longtime New Jersey analyst, Stuart Bockler, said Thursday that his reports on at least one company, Global Data Tel, were stolen twice this year and e-mailed to countless investors who had signed up for free monthly research reports from www.stockinvestor.com...

"They're stealing my work and other people's work and making a business out of it," said Bockler, who sells his research and advice for an annual fee on his own Web site. "They have pirated considerable funds from us."

Why would the victims have "stolen" Bockler's less-than-penetrating "reports"? I mean, Abby Cohen he ain't. Why didn't they just make them up? Anyone could produce something of that (doubtful) quality in a few hours. And full credit was given to Bockler on the site.

Have others complained that their work was stolen?

The Russian mafia rumor's been floating about since early yesterday, but this is the first time it's been mentioned in the press, isn't it?

I'm still way behind on the CDDD thread....

Hey! Is Boris Russian??

There is a vague reference to Russia (not Russian mafia) in the Reuters article from Wednesday:

Kaye said investigators were probing the traders' connections with "people they did business with in an organized way," including people in Russia.

Why not? If someone else is spinning the line you want, use it. Appearance of third party confirmation and when things blow up you can point to the third party and like the classic con, say you were duped, too.

Have you talked privately with Anthony@Pacific? He may be able to shed some light, although he is probably scared to death and wouldn't peep a word.
