Yes, and with a little Microsoft and a little Vodafone
and lots of Total Stock Market for your other 96% of your
stock portfolio over the past 600 days you have just made
a huge ton of money!

So... Does tax loss selling end 3 days before the year ends? When is the last day you can sell your losers and book a tax loss for 1998?

I was once told it is the settlement date that matters so the last tax loss selling day day is Dec. 28th or 29th... True?

I'm figuring the tax loss selling will end soon and then I can get some more shares... right now I can buy back cheaper the ones I sold in Oct. for a tax loss to buy LRCX which has nearly doubled... funny, Lam and a few others in the sector still look like better values on P/S and P/B. Any comments from others that follow this stock?

TIA
Kirk

I don't know the answer to that one, but I bet Pete from Stamford, CT or Colin Cody does.

Does anyone know if UTEK Semiconductor in the following story has any relationship to our UTEK?

I suspect not. But does anyone know?

Dow Jones Newswires

SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- S3 Inc. (SIII) and UMC Group unveiled 0.18 micron design, which S3 will use to produce higher-performing graphics accelerators.

In a press release Wednesday, S3 said the 0.18 micron design will be available in the first half of 1999.

S3 supplies multimedia acceleration hardware and related software.

UMC Group, Sunnyvale, Calif., includes United Microelectronics Corp., United Semiconductor Corp., United Integrated Circuits Corp, United Silicon Inc. and UTEK Semiconductor Corp.

Ian,

I believe UTEK Semiconductor is an acronym for some Taiwanese foundry partnership, but I'm not positive.

Kirk-Tax Selling

So... Does tax loss selling end 3 days before the year ends? When is the last day you can sell your losers and book a tax loss for 1998?

The last date you can sell and book a tax loss for 1998 is December 31st. My understanding is your sell order has to be in before the end of the year and the settlement date three days later does not matter.

Please keep in mind I am just a farmer who has a moose for a best friend and not a tax professional.

Well, my $28/per shares I sold for the tax loss are long gone at $18+ and looks like I can buy them back cheaper now. I wonder if I should wait until next week for more tax loss selling? I still like my LRCX shares for a hold as it seems to have better value still than UTEK, but.... BB is still positive on this stock so it seems worth a shot for a few more shares. Maybe a good place for some of my IBM profits I took to reduce to 4%... 8)

RE: Tax Loss Selling:

The "TRADE DATE" determines when Capital Gains (Losses) are recognized for tax purposes. Thus, tax loss sales can occur right up through the last trading day of the year. I know first hand as I've taken a tax loss on my formerly held UTEK and STII shares.

Goes to show even Bob isn't 100% (maybe 85-90% --- close enough)
