Well, in this race the incumbent is stepping down so it was a free fight. From what I have heard from my New Jersey sources, the article in today's Times is accurate, that it was more than money. After all, a willingness to throw money around didn't get Huffington, Forbes, Perot, or Lauder elected. Corzine used the money to build a powerful machine to get awareness and to get the vote out. He made friends with all the important Democrats. He got 58% of the vote.
Meanwhile, Florio so disgusted his constituency when he was governor that they couldn't wait to give him the boot. He has been trying, unsuccessfully, to make a comeback. |
