from Reuters:
biz.yahoo.com

"Sky Global will also include News Corp's Asian satellite television company Star TV, Sky Latin America and interactive TV company Gemstar-TV Guide International (NASDAQ NM:GMST), in which News Corp recently acquired a majority stake through a complex deal with cable king John Malone's Liberty Media Group (NYSE:LMGA).

Majority stake? I don't theeenk so....

-Rose-

PS: bigcharts.com shows afterhours for GMST as up 2 3/4 points today on volume of 75,100 shares...anyone ascribe any actual significance to this, or is it just the usual afterhours weirdness?

Rose,

I read that also and smiled. News Corp has already registered the 40% (fully diluted) Gemstar stake under Sky Global. From what I have read News Corp will spin-off ~30% of Sky Global yielding ~70% of 40% or ~28%.

It will be interesting to see the others that invest in Sky Global and by default Gemstar. John Malone will own ~5%. I would not rule out Sony. They've already partnered with News Corp in Japan's Sky PerfecTV when they merged their respective satellite operations. GMH also owns 6.7% from folding DirecTV Japan into Sky PerfectTV. It would also bring Japans only remaining DTH system under the Sky Global umbrella (100%) if NWS, GMH and SNE can work it out.

Regards
Stew

200 million over 10 years is hardly anything to get excited about when you look at the GMST Market Cap. In addition, Suing your own customers in not the way to build long term relationships. I would hardly count MOT as a dedicated customer. Looks like GMST will burn more bridges than establish relationships, and MSO will use their own IPG.

IMHO,

Benny

I see in your profile that WGAT is one of your 2 favorite stocks.

You and I disagree.

But I do not think its a winner take all game. We shall see.

Best of Luck,
Drew

watched c span 2 today. chairman of twe publishing and vp of rca-thompson media discussed potential of rca e books. although now at 300 they will come down in price quickly. discussed 2.5 BILLION in sales by 2005 and 28 million in peoples hands by then. no one even mentioned college texts or related things that could be on e books. they talked about how to protect authors right and how to collect momey. the publishing industry is behind e books if they can make a buck out of it . twe thinks so. gmst was mentioned as the ip holder. rocky

>> 200 million over 10 years is hardly anything to get excited about when you look at the GMST Market Cap.

Your standards must be a lot higher than mine. Gemstar's current market cap is $29B, so we're talking about a 7 bagger in 10 years. Guarantee me that kind of interest in your bank and I'll gladly sell all of my stocks and make a deposit.

>> Suing your own customers in not the way to build long term relationships.

You miss the point. Motorola/GI was not a customer; they were stealing Gemstar's intellectual property! It took a lawsuit to make them a customer.

How does $200M in income relate to a "7-bagger"? Seems like the Bushian "fuzzy math."

Current market cap of $29B time 7 is roughly $200B.

No, just plain old multiplication.

BTW, $29B to $200B over 10 years would be a compound return of approximately 21.5%. I'll take it <gg>.

Still fuzzy math, how does 200 million equal 200 billion?

Your missing a few zero's,

Benny
