The dates reflected on your post indicates July, 2012, but isn't the annual ASCO meeting taking place June 1-5th in Chicago. What is the difference in dates? Is this a separate ASCO meeting and wouldn't these companies present at the June conference for better exposure?

This is the "Best of ASCO" program where they select some of the best abstracts to be presented at ASCO and discuss them in other cities like Chicago and Boston at a later date. Sort of a mini-ASCO for folks that can't travel to the real thing.

I have to say that I have not been all that impressed by the author's other biotech articles. He may be making money, but I think it is for the wrong reasons. Anyone else with thoughts?

>The compounds also have been found previously in cantaloupe and other orange-fleshed melons, suggesting humans might even absorb these molecules directly from their diet.<

Should I toss my cantaloupes? I’ve been having a generous portion almost every day.

Prior to seeing that PR, my belief was that eating unprocessed fruits and vegetables was healthy. Period.

I would eat about a dozen different fruits and vegetables during the day. (Cantaloupe, watermelon, apple, orange, grapes, lettuce, kale, cauliflower, carrots, Orange/Red bell peppers, onion, garlic, tomatoes, celery, radishes, spinach being the most common).

Prior to my dermatologist putting me on Accutane, he did a variety of tests. My betacarotene level was above the high end of the normal range. I take no supplements other than Vitamin D and Omega3.

I haven't changed my dietary habits nor do I fear any of the risks which that PR associates with excess betacarotene.

My belief remains unchanged. I might be completely wrong. But as Jim S. has reminded me; Correlation is not causation.

The PR surprised me. That's why I posted it.

Ouch! Even if the gov't is overstating the amounts, that's more than $4M per person charged. Frequently, what they catch is only the tip of the iceberg. Amazing!

U.S. Charges 107 With Medicare Fraud Federal authorities have charged 107 doctors, nurses and social workers in seven cities with Medicare fraud in a crackdown on alleged scams that cheated the program of $452 million.

No. According to this paper, at equimolar concentrations, the most potent antagonist variant (ß-apo-13-carotenone) reduced the effect of ATRA (the good guy) by about half. In canteloupe, the bad guy is present at between 1% and 2% of the quantity of the good guy. So eat your canteloupes! (Good for retina heath too).

In the presence of oxidative stress and high beta-carotene levels, you get more of the bad guy produced via the alternative cleavage. So that is a possible explanation for the failure of beta-carotene supplements in smokers.

Here's the canteloupe reference:

We detected ß-apo-8'-, ß-apo-10', ß-apo-12'-, and ß-apo-14'-carotenals and ß-apo-13-carotenone in orange-fleshed melons (at a level of 1-2% of total ß-carotene). Orange-fleshed honeydew melon fruit had higher amounts of ß-carotene than cantaloupe. The bioaccessibility/bioavailability of ß-carotene from orange-fleshed melons was comparable to that from carrot (Daucus carota).

Anyone else with thoughts?

Only that reaching for an extraneous event like graduating to a more liquid market to justify an investment is never persuasive..

I had some IMUC but sold it when it seemed to be rolling over recently. It was strictly a momentum play. There may be very good things coming to IMUC, but they're still pretty far down the road.
