AOL outdoes earnings expectations

update Fueled by strong revenue growth, America Online today said it nearly doubled its earnings for the third quarter and beat analysts' expectations.

America Online reported net profits of $117 million, or 11 cents per share, for the quarter ended March 31, excluding one-time events, compared with $39 million, or 4 cents per share, a year ago.

Analysts had expected the online giant to post earnings of 9 cents per share, according to First Call. But whisper numbers by Wall Street had figures as high as 11 cents.

Including charges and one-time gains, the company posted consolidated net earnings of $420 million, or 33 cents per share. This quarter marks the first one in which AOL's newly acquired Netscape Communications was folded into its financial operations. The figures compare with AOL's third-quarter loss of $78 million, or 8 cents per share, a year ago.

No gag me! What .11 in earnings? Wow! My GM earned $2.84 and is no where near AOL's ridiculous market cap. Go figure!

I spent a month...trying to explain this to Chuzzlewit et al and the Internet sector thread....

because I live it! Clients are "bidding" and "clawing" at each other...to get into partnership/advertising positions with AOL...

it is not "just" an isp, or "just" email.....and I will not repeat myself again...with all the things that it is....or will be...in my estimation.... See Internet sector thread....or Internet Analysis...not sure of the exact name...or if it even still exists...

smile...Mary

There is the back log you mentioned thanks. Soon we will start to see a back-log in software sales from the Netscape group. Then we will see AOL start to sound more like MSFT, they are already trying to tone it down like MSFT playing the analyst like fiddles.

Has anyone heard the subscription turnover rate for AOL? I heard it would be good if the number was less than 50. Called Churn i think.... If anyone knows about this, i would like to learn.

Thanks

"But the company cautioned it wouldn't keep up this pace for the rest of the year."

Hahaha...where have I heard those famous last words quarter after quarter? Mr. Gates? Is that you pretending to be Mr. Case? <g>

Gregory,

Then we will see AOL start to sound more like MSFT, they are already trying to tone it down like MSFT playing the analyst like fiddles.

I see things in a similar way.

Thanks
