The invention, which has been welcomed by Gwynneth Flower, head of the government's Action 2000 campaign, is designed to detect the millennium bug in the billions of embedded systems hidden away in buildings around the world.

I wonder if it could fit inside a Timex watch? [Sorry, FBN joke (gg)]

Seriously, it would be great to have an easy way to find embedded chips, but what if you have to disassemble a complex machine to get at it? Assuming you can disassemble it, what if, after removing it, you find the company that made it went out of business? Assuming the company is still in business, what if they chip has to be custom programmed? Assuming you can custom program it, what if the surrounding chips must now also be redesigned or replaced? Assuming you can get all the surrounding chips to work with the new chip, what if the circuit board must be redesigned to accommodate them? Assuming the circuit board can be redesigned, what happens if the board now won't fit in the machine? Assuming the new board fits in the machine, what happens if you find a bug when you test it? Assuming there are no bugs with the newly remediated machine, are there enough days between now at 1/1/2000 to assure you'll have enough time to find and fix each embedded system? Sorry, I don't think so.

I have a specially-trained dog for rent to any interested Fortune 500 company. You let him lap up a six-pack of beer and he will walk through a factory, lift his leg, and mark any machine with an embedded systems Y2K problem.

Now trying to figure out what his revenue potential is after the Y2K crises. I might teach him to pick short candidates in a similar manner.

Of course, I have named him Tava.

Thanks for the sightings. I beg to differ from his thesis. What do I know? Time will prove! Ram

Humble thanks, DD, for the links, and your kind words!

Just got back from another trip, so please excuse my late reply.

Like the Mad one and many others, I've smelled trouble ahead for quite some time, and have been mostly cash for a while. Unlike some, I do not believe y2k stocks valuations will go up if/when the market really tanks. Margin calls and such will impact all stocks, is my take.

I've been searching for my y2k getaway, and found it! Have a verbal agreement to buy 80 acres of pristine wilderness with a 24 x 32 ft., 3/4 underground solar powered house, with a hand pump well and a sauna inside. Yes, it has a phone line. <g> It's incredible! Bears, cougars, wolves, eagles - heaven!

By the way, for those that missed the beginning, FBNA started around here: #reply-2397812 . Yes, my master was one of the founding associates. ;-)

Cheers,

Svejk

That's nice. China has a billion people who earn less in a year than EGNS probably charges in a single day. Makes real economic sense to me, not to mention there are plenty of Chinese-speaking firms like CCD Online who probably will get first digs over there if the occasion ever arises.

Jeff, I think your skepticism is probably well-founded. But then I know you have elevated skepticism to a high art. What with other vendors, the CEO of CA(wang?) hustling like crazy in China, there will be alot of feet in the door.

If the Chinese are smart, they will deal with someone who is willing to take a discount on the Y2K work for the sake of good will on future work. Does EGNS have anything to offer there? I'm not sure.

Ram, looks like we are on to the next wave of price explosion in y2k stocks. This time I feel it will last few months. Congress, media and public are becoming aware of the problem more than ever. You will also see a tightening of the prices by established companies. I am all set to take ride with IMRS,CBSL,MAST, SYNT and SEEC. This is an excellent time to buy as earnings are going to be good. I am both in shares and options. TAVA has to show a move here or it will be left behind!!
