I am a very active ebay seller and a stockholder. I have an impeccable and extensive feedback. I am really pissed at this new
charge for reserved auctions. I will be actively seeking alternative auction sites to list my items. Ebay could easily have taken a more constructive approach to the problem. They could easily program their
site to require bidders to inform ebay if a purchase has been made
from an auction in which the reserve was not met. They could easily
disallow a bidder from further bidding until the bidder posts the answer to one or more questions which would give ebay the information they need to track what they think are afterauction sales.
Nonetheless, Wall Street is going to like this announcement in the short run unless there is a decline in number of auctions as a result.

Hubert, Are you paid to post?

Here is a multiple choice answer

A) No, but I should be, are you offering?

B) I searched your abbreviated response for an underlying meaning, and found none, therefore I left, not even vaguely intrigued or interested.

C) All of the above

I have to laugh at some people here. Some are saying that the little guy is pissed and will be leaving. Some say that if their are no sellers then buyers will look elsewhere. But the facts are, is that when it comes to auctions there will only be 2-3 survivers and the smaller ones will be eaten up or just go broke. The amount of sellers and buyers feeds off of itself. The sellers know that if you want to sell your item at the best price and get the most people to look at it you have to go to a site that attracts buyers and is well known: Hence EBAY. If you go to some second rate site and no one sees your item you won't be getting a very good price for it.
SO the people who say they are going somewhere else will be back soon when their items are selling for 75% of what they used to get on EBAY.
As far as the stock price goes, it'll take care of itself. Once the holiday rush comes to buy internets EBAY will be heading back towards 200 and probably past the old high of 234. Then everyone will be wondering how they missed the opportunity to buy EBAY down in the low 100's.
This is an easy doubling of your money in a few months.

Hubert:

There are many things that eBay does that I disagree with (and I have made that VERY clear on this board).

However, moving to reign in the abuse of Reserve auctions is something I think will benefit everyone.

I get tired of sellers on eBay trying to extract way above market values for items, when eBay is providing them with very much reduced marketing expenses. (Buyers come to eBay looking for a deal....)

These people are being pigs, and as far as I am concerned, they can go to slaughter.

But you know what? They aren't going anywhere, because they get their best prices on eBay.

What is the harm in letting the buyers know the ballpark of the reserve?

Now, THAT would really be something!

You would see the use of Reserve auctions go WAY down if eBay offered that search option!

Growth from 13 weeks (one quarter) ago: 22.8 percent

Note: I am eliminating the "new" statistic used the past several weeks. It takes too much time to produce, and I am satisfied that our classical statistic is working fine these days.

If someone wants to pick up on keeping track of the "new" statistic and post it on this board, go for it!

No harm whatsoever.....I rarely even use reserves. My objection to the policy change is less about the issue of reserves and more about how they (Ebay) will make a sweeping change with little if any consideration of their primary income producing customers.

I have re-thunk some of my comments here. 1) I apologize to the group for my choice of words. (yes, believe it, it's sincere!)

2)I thought back to several examples of large store-front operations moving into categories where I am selling, taking out a $200 "featured" ad, and then putting a reserve item up with a 1 cent starting bid. Clearly such ads are not meant to generate business within Ebay, but to draw people to their own web site.

I am thinking maybe the problem is not so much about reserves but using Ebay for "less than honest" practices.

On Edeal.com, the buyer and seller are completely inaccessible to each other until the auction ends, except through Edeal. Also, if a seller wants to LOWER the starting price of an auction after it has begun, they may do so. These two features might be very helpful on Ebay.

I would also consider it reasonable for established businesses who are using Ebay to supplement their brick and mortar sales, to be identified with some sort of designation. Some people would prefer to deal with them exclusively, others would prefer not to deal with them at all. (I fall in the last category)

I know the level of service I give people FAR exceeds what they will get through a normal store or mail order operation. I would not mind at all being "labeled" as a casual seller, and even having my auctions removed from the larger sellers area (or vice versa)

After the uproar on the chat sections, I reconsidered this whole issue. Many of the people who are screaming the loudest, and ARE actually leaving Ebay, will not be missed.
I looked at some of their methods, and they do in fact seem to be in violation of the "spirit" of the auction agreement.
(a general statement only)

Maybe the Ebay experience will be enhanced in the long run, but there is still the nagging issue of their COMPLETE insensitivity toward their customers. If one single thing can bring Ebay to it's knees, that's what it will be.

Doug,

Given all the problems that have occurred with ebay's site the past 3 months, don't you think the auction count growth rate has been very steady? We have gone through the summer season and outages and the count hasn't flinched much at all. This points to tremendous underlying strength.

Have you made any new share purchases lately or would you?

The count through and after the labor day period will be interesting. Do you think the count can hit 3 million by October 1?

Given the choice, SI management would probably pay Hubert *not* to post ...LOL!

Cheers,
Url

P.S. Hubert I usually include the MSRP, how much Amazon & CDNow charge for their CDs (Vs. how much bidding starts on my CD)
and Real Audio clips...seems to help sell them....
