Interestingly enough, this laptop won't open into safe mode on the F8 button. It just sits there.
I am fairly sure bing is being blocked by a security program but have yet to figure out which one.
The website opens on my other machines.

Ron,

Go to this web site ( kloth.net  ) and enter bing.com  in the domain box. That will return an IP address (i.e. 131.253.13.32). Enter that IP address in your browser address bar instead of bing.com.  See if that allows you to connect to Bing.

If not, you might want to check your logs in the Event viewer to see if you can determine why you can not connect to Bing. Depending on what version of Windows you are using, you can find the event viewer from the Control Panel in Administrative Tools.

Hope this helps.

B.K.

Thanks.
That didn't work either. The browser just churns awhile then says bing is taking too long to load.
I'll try the event viewer next. This is very interesting. It's not that bing is so essential but I find it
rather ironic that Microsoft's own browser, IE won't connect to it either.

Hotmail Changing to Outlook
Aug 2, 2012

Email is one of the main forms of communication in the business world. In the finance community, this can be particularly true, as workers have to communicate with industry leaders in different time zones, so videoconferencing and telephone calls can sometimes be out of the question.

Those who use Hotmail as their main email gateway will be seeing some notable changes in the near future. ZDNet reported that the name of the platform is changing, along with many of the features. Hotmail will now go by the older Outlook, which had been reserved for Microsoft's enterprise platform. The source said that those with @hotmail.com email addresses should be aware of the change. While this type of address will remain valid at least for the time being, if an individual has a common name, someone else might take it following the switch to Outlook.

Eventually, according to ZDNet, Outlook will completely replace Hotmail and Windows Live as the main Microsoft email offering.

The Guardian reported approximately 350 million will be affected by the change. The shift was prompted by large competition from Gmail, which offers more professional-sounding addresses, a cleaner look and more storage space, the newspaper indicated. Stagnant participation signaled a need for change to remain competitive.

Avast anti-virus and MS Security Essentials? No, do not have 2 anti-virus software on your system at the same time.

You can have Avast and say, Spybot, or Malwarebytes that look for malware, thats okay, but not two anti-virus software, I would NOT recommend it.

I use ESET NOD 32 Anti-virus 5 on my computers, as well as Spybot and Malwarebytes. When I scan with the malware software, I temporarily disable my anti-virus software just to be safe.

A current illustration on what is enough. One of my daughters is visiting and I suggested I checkout her daughters laptop. It's OS is an up to date Win 7 using Defender and Win firewall for protection.

1) ran Malwarebytes: 277 malwares
2) ran Avira: 7 more malwares
3) ran Housecall: 0 more found
4) ran SAS: 656 tracking cookies found
5) ran JV16 Reg Cleaner: 2475 registry errors
6) ran PSI: 7 programs with extreme critical updates (3 were diff Adobe apps)
7) ran Malwarebytes in Safe mode: 2 malwares found
8) ran Avira rescue disk: 3 malware found
9) in process with Kaspersky rescue disk: number found TBD
10) will followup with Bit Defender's rescue disk as a wrap up

Among the malwares found were 3 password stealing worms, couple dozen Trojans, a multitude of viruses including many registry hooks and various nuisance type malware.

IMO, MS Essentials is OK to use but would never DEPEND on it. I use Avira for real time, additionally I program scheduled scans daily with Avira and Malwarebytes. I manually scan with SAS at least weekly. I use Spywareblaster for its killbit protection. I occasionally manually scan with Spybot Search & Destroy and use Housecall if I suspect a problem.

Additionally I frequently clean my registry with JV16 power tools.

Of course I have HW (router) protection and SW (Comodo Firewall) protection. Unfortunately, no one or two programs will catch em all so you need to cover the bases.

FWIW, my granddaugther's results are worse I've seen but then I am not use to dealing with PCs so unprotected.

I would strongly urge you to read AV comparatives current and past testing and form your own conclusions as to which products you think are best. Currently Bit Defender is looking very strong but requires exclusivity (no other products INSTALLED whether active or not) this makes it a no go for me except when an extreme case requires rescue disk type action.

Luck
LTBH

PS Had I known the degree of infection, I would have started with the rescue disks and saved ~9 hours of work.
